Life, love, death, and poetry in the work of Brian Patten   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
Patten presents the theme of a boy's alienation from home because of the fact that he is a juvenile delinquent.
Patten's works are notable for their romanticism, with subtle references to the deception and frustration caused by estrangement from love.
But Patten believes that death does not necessarily have to be the end, that a 'man lives so many different lengths of time' in that he continues to live in the thoughts of his near and dear ones even after his death.

Patten is also an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool John Moore's University, and has received awards including an Eric Gregory Award, an Arts Council award, and a Cholmondeley Award.
Yet there is much variety within this, both in terms of his skilful use of fixed and free poetic forms and in his material itself, which includes touching elegies, to Stevie Smith and Patten's mother, retold fables and a tribute to Roald Dahl, another writer who could write for all ages.
Patten, like the other Mersey Sound poets, is a very experienced performer, able to pitch the performance of each poem precisely.

THE STORY GIANT by Brian Patten   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
Written by a poet, it does indeed celebrate the wonderful heritage of folk tales.
Patten gives some excellent retellings of them in a simple but direct style although I found the whole book rather fragmented.
The children's real lives are hinted at but it would have been more interesting perhaps to have explored them more, as having them sitting around in the castle telling stories is rather static.
