Ransom’s figurative clay sculptures are based on deities found in world cultures, and the musical instruments that are incorporated into their bodies have their origins in ancient Peru.
Ransom’s new series of “Deities,” smaller in scale than their predecessors, are more complex instruments, each containing two, three or four different wind instruments.
They are meant to be played by blowing various apertures, or rocking the entire sculpture, as in the case of the “water-jar” pieces, (to displace air by shifting the water levels in the inner chambers of the piece).

Ransom first hit on the idea of making ceramic instruments as a young musician and art student at Rhode Island School of Design in the '70s.
Since then, Ransom has slowly perfected his method of sculpting and firing ceramic instruments, mixing his own combination of clays based on precise calculations of the shrinkage factor during the drying and firing processes.
Ransom's work with whistling water jugs stems from a Fulbright grant that took him to Peru to study the indigenous craft.

Being introduced to yet another instructor last night (new people always make it a bit awkward) made it seem like Brian is the "old" instructor now, which made today really cool because he thinks we're awesome.
But yeah, the run is finally figured out, and there is a WAY COOL cymbal split in the percussion break (GAH, I want a cymbal *pout* haha), and we got invited to see the Brian Eisenberg jazz orchestra at SDSU in 2 weeks.
Wooooo Nate is on snare and Brian is on tenors!
