  Brian Rix, Baron Rix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sir Brian Rix, Baron Rix (born January 27, 1924) is a British actor and charity worker.
Rix was associated with the Whitehall Theatre from 1944 until 1969, although as an actor-manager he became increasingly well known on TV as well as stage.
Rix's daughter Shelley was born in 1951 with Down's syndrome, and he has always used his name to promote public awareness and understanding of mental handicap.

Lord Rix was appointed the CBE in 1977, knighted in 1986, became a Life Baron in 1992 and has been awarded seven Honourary University Degrees.

Brian Rix was based at the Whitehall Theatre from 1944 to 1967 with plays like Dry Rot, all of them farces.
I'm almost sure that as Viv says, Brian Rix not only did sterling work for Mencap but actually was the original founder of the society as a result of having had a mentally handicapped child himself.
Brian was and I thnk still is a very keen amateur radio enthusiast his call sign being G2 DQU, as is weatherman Jim Bacon whoes call sign I have forgotten.

The Rix Centre for Innovation and Learning Disability, a new initiative that harnesses the power of multimedia and the internet to benefit people with learning disabilities, their families and carers around the world, was launched this week at UEL.
The Rix Centre will enable people with learning disabilities worldwide to share their experience and expertise online, facilitate research and dissemination of knowledge and accessible learning tools, and raise awareness of learning disability issues among policy makers and the media.
The Rix Centre will build upon the success of the Big Tree Multimedia Learning Disability research project at UEL's School of Cultural and Innovation Studies, which over the past three years has worked in collaboration with private, public and voluntary sector agencies to pioneer multimedia profiling, e-learning, inclusive production and internet accessibility research.

The theatre is mostly associated with two people - Phyllis Dixey and Brian Rix.
These revues where then replaced by a farce written by RF Delderfield which was called Worm's Eye View which also proved successful and run for two seasons at the Whitehall bringing the total number of performances to 1,745.
This proved successful and Brian Rix went on to produce many farces at this theatre, which collectively became known as The Whitehall Farces and they began to be regularly televised, reaching a far greater audience than the small Whitehall Theatre could seat.
