  Brian Sabean Information
Brian Sabean is the General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, a Major League Baseball franchise.
Prior to the 2004 season, Sabean again faced strong criticism for his offseason moves, especially for not signing a closer to replace the injured Robb Nen and the departing Tim Worrell, and for not signing a power hitter to protect Barry Bonds in the lineup.
Sabean was named Executive of the Year by the Sporting News in 2003, the first time a member of the Giants organization had received that award since Al Rosen in 1987.

Sabean: In our judgment, we are not only a stronger team from top to bottom that started the season last year, but are also stronger than the team we had to finish the year.
Sabean: We certainly hope so, but believe it or not, there are times when players of his stature are virtually given a complete day off, which means they aren't available to pinch-hit or even play defense.
Sabean: We had bona fide interest in Richie, but unfortunately his signing would have cost us another draft pick and we felt with the picks we lost last year, and the two we've already lost this year, that it was time to hold onto our picks.

Sabean: Barry and Felipe are in constant conversation about the feelings and relative strengths that he is able to bring with his spot in the order.
Sabean: There is some truth to that, especially when pitchers try to overcompensate in games, but they have enough side work and do enough throwing to be able to get a feel for the pitch in general.

 Brian Sabean - Wiki Gonzalez
Brian Sabean is the General Manager of the San Francisco Giants.
Notorious for publicly dissing sabermetrics, saying it gives him a headache, Sabean has lately become famous for signing a whole lotta veterans, particularly free agents early in the offseason.
Although he is throwing away amateur draft picks by signing them before arbitration is offered, he maintains this is by design, so that he can acquire the players he wants while not paying huge signing bonuses to unproven talent.

Sabean maintained he was forced to trade Benitez because of unrelenting disapproval from the media and fans.
What we're left is a portrait of a man apparently frustrated with his team, by the manner in which he was forced to assemble it, and the prospect of having his job hang in the balance -- to the point that he did something he rarely does.

Coming to a crossroads / Sabean's legacy may depend on Giants' future without Bonds
Sabean's first act was a showstopper: He traded Matt Williams, one of the most popular Giants ever, for a bunch of names that meant little to fans in San Francisco.
Sabean, then an assistant, knew he was going to be promoted to GM and knew the Giants could not thrive with Williams and Bonds consuming 40 percent of the payroll.
That prompted Sabean to sign Alfonzo to be the new run producer, a four-year, $26 million contract that became an albatross around the Giants' neck for three years as the third baseman underperformed.

When Brian Sabean took over as General Manager of the San Francisco Giants after the 1996 season, I was an extremely skeptical 17 year old fan.
Sabean's first major move was to deal popular third baseman Matt Williams, who had been around the organization since before I started watching baseball, to the Cleveland Indians for what amounted to, at the time, a bucket of parts.
Brian Sabean needs a super special assistant who will probably wind up showing him the ropes after 2007, when Bonds finally fades into the sunset, with no World Series ring and the number 754 next to his name for the rest of eternity.

In San Francisco, Brian Sabean is generally considered the pick of the litter, and was last year named Executive of the Year by the The Sporting News.
In essence, Sabean dealt two former first round picks for a pitcher who an ERA of 4.76 at the time of the deal (leading even John Sickels to call the price paid as extremely generous) and came out the clear winner.
For the most part, Sabean and co have had an uncanny ability to project their pitching talent, especially in the minors- in his nine year tenure, the best prospect he has given up in a deal has probably been Keith Foulke and the vast majority of them have never come made the big leagues.
