Brian Setzer also recorded some solo albums during Stray Cats' break in the 1980s along with some in the 1990s.
Brian recently moved from Southern California to Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife Julie (nee Reiten, former singer with the Dustbunnies), whom he originally met when she auditioned (and was hired) as a back-up singer for the Brian Setzer Orchestra in 1999.

Brian Setzer, late of the 1980s band Stray Cats, has come up with some great 1950s big-band sounds on "The Brian Setzer Orchestra." He takes a 19-piece band--complete with saxophones, trumpets, piano, great drums, and everything else--and adds in electric guitar.
Setzer's surprisingly jaunty version of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" is a genuine treat--I'd only ever heard this song done in a sort of mournful, yearning way, but he turns it into an upbeat delight.
Setzer wrote nearly half the music that appears on this album, and he's nearly as good with a pen as he is with a guitar.

When the Brian Setzer Orchestra launched in the early 1990s, the music scene was captivated by grunge acts such as Pearl Jam and the gansta rap of Dr. Dre.
Setzer’s hipster big-band sound (and his fetching back-up singers) caught on and his sold-out shows became one of the hottest tickets in town.

Setzer acknowledges that his taste in recording gear and methods runs to the retro over the modern.
Setzer and his bandmates used charts created by the guitarist and trombonist/arranger Mark Jones; the duo have been doing this for the past eight years.
Following the initial recording of all the tracks, Setzer's label felt that the first single, "In the Mood," should be turned into a vocal number, so the guitarist went to work with Grammy- and TEC Award-winning producer Glen Ballard.

Brian Setzer may have been vilified by purists and progressives for daring to "modernize" rockabilly and swing, but the pompadoured Long Islander has now laughed all the way to the bank twice at their expense--and in two different decades, no less.
But as he's admitted, Setzer's a rockabilly writer/guitarist by nature, a notion reinforced here by his own tunes and a flashy take on the instrumental "Caravan." His band charts are both serviceable and modern, but might benefit from a different arranger's perspective.

Born in New York City and raised in Long Island, Brian Setzer started forming rockabilly acts such as his Bloodless Pharaohs in the late '70s, finally putting together the Stray Cats (then known as the Tom Cats) in 1978.
Solo-wise, Setzer released Live Nude Guitars in 1988, but it was several years later that he put together a 17-piece orchestra in the style of the old big bands and began to play classic swing with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, releasing their self-titled first album in 1994.

The last few years have been happily productive for Brian Setzer fans - the big band albums, Christmas album, numerous TV appearances; even going back to the sparse, three-piece format that brought him his initial fame in the 80’s by forming the ’68 Comeback Special.
Now with new bassist, Johnny ‘Spaz’ Hatton in tow, The Brian Setzer Trio (as they are officially called despite the album being credited to Setzer alone) have unleashed their high-octane debut Nitro Burnin’ Funny Daddy.
While there are some similarities to his past, The Brian Setzer Trio are not The Stray Cats Mark 3 but a group that reaches farther into the musical landscape of American popular music than the genre of ‘rockabilly’ could allow.

The disc kicks off in high gear with screeching trumpet and a quintet of sweet saxes before Setzer fills up the room with the originals "Lady Luck" and "Ball and Chain." Both feature witty lyrics that recall the smoke-filled bars and dance halls of the '40s and '50s while still sounding contemporary.
That's the trick Setzer maintains throughout the whole record: the style references Louis Jordan and Louis Prima through Count Basie and Henry Mancini, but the band is powerful and tight as a drum.
