Interview: Rachel Cooke meets Brian Sewell | Review | The Observer
This is a scene - the gripping opening scene - from The Grand Tour, Brian Sewell's new series for Five, a travelogue in which he examines 'the dark underbelly' of the supposedly educational journeys that were undertaken in the 18th century by young Englishmen from wealthy families.
It is probably fair to say that Sewell's experience with Five was not an entirely happy one, and he believes that this series, his second (The Naked Pilgrim, in which he rode to Santiago de Compostela, being the first), will also be his last.
It was Sewell who spirited Blunt away from the eyes of the press in 1979 after his exposure as 'the Fourth Man' in the Burgess-Maclean spy scandal.

Amazon.co.uk: Brian Sewell's Grand Tour: DVD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
As much as many people find Brian Sewell to be insufferably pompous, he comes into his own when the subject matter fires his imagination, and for all Italophiles this should be on their Christmas list.
Brian takes the viewer on a splendid tour of the peninsula aboard his left-hand-drive Mercedes, stopping to ruminate on the worthy artistic, cultural and architectural aspects of the country, while frequently underlining the more base motives of 18th-century Grand Tourists - sex, drink, and gambling.
Mr Sewell seems to undertake the task with more rigour than last time, whilst still leaving room for his contrasting fascination with all things sexual and debauched (especially the former).
