Brian Talboys - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talboys was born in Wanganui on 7 June 1921.
Talboys, while not particularly supportive of Muldoon's leadership style, refused to actively campaign against his party's leader, and would only make a move if it could be shown beforehand that a majority of the party supported it.
Talboys retired from Parliament at the 1981 election, a year after the abortive leadership challenge.

Gair was not involved in planning this bid, but was supportive of it, and worked hard to convince Talboys that a challenge was a good idea.
In the end, however, Talboys bailed out, and the coup collapsed without a vote ever being taken.
Gair continued to advocate a challenge, but Talboys was adamant that preserving party unity was more important than curbing Muldoon's damaging leadership style.

Robert Muldoon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1980, there was an abortive attempt, known as the Colonels' Coup, to replace Muldoon with his more economically liberal deputy, Brian Talboys.
Curiously, he was also patron of the Mongrel Mob gang, members of which paid him solemn respect by kneeling on the street and performing two haka during his funeral procession in 1992.
Some argue that he was responsible for much of the pain caused by the free-market reforms of 1984 – 1993, because by holding on for as long as he did he forced the inevitable reforms to be implemented with unusual speed and severity.

The lighting must have had an effect on the 'electric' green team as the afternoon proved to be a disaster for the blues as, despite three of the matches going down the 18th, all of the games were won by the green team.
Both Brian Goroll and Brian Keates scored a measly 4 stableford points at the preceding society day at Beau Desert, but it was Brian Goroll who picked up his game and triumphed 4/3.
Brian is not the first person to lose by such a margin in a major matchplay competition.

 Brian Godfrey
Joined Gloucester in 1987 having had success at Weymouth and Bath, and within two years had amassed a fearsome squad of players that took City to the midland division title in some style, with a flurry of goals and fluid attacking play that saw the birth of the original T-End 'barmy army'.
In the 1965/66 season Brian was Preston’s leading goalscorer including a four-minute hat trick in the last game of the season, in the 9-0 against Cardiff City.
The highlight of his time in Devon was the club's run to the 6th Round of the FA Cup, beating Leicester City and Newcastle United before losing to eventual winners Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Brian Goroll was having such a bad time and became so dis-spirited that he gave his apologies and walked off the course after 11 holes with only four points on the card.
Brian needn't have been too bothered by his score of only four points after eleven, as that was the final total of Brian Keates who posted the lowest ever total in BUNGS history.

Led by ministers Derek Quigley, Jim McLay, and Jim Bolger, the challenge (dubbed the "colonels' coup") against Muldoon aimed to replace him with Brian Talboys, his deputy.
However, even then, public dissatisfaction with Government policies was growing, and Muldoon's controlling and belligerent style of leadership became less and less appealing.

The National Party had won a landslide victory in the 1975 election, but in the 1978 election, although remaining in office, had lost ground.
The style of Robert Muldoon's leadership was growing increasingly unpopular, both with his party and with the public, and there had been an abortive leadership challenge by Brian Talboys in 1980.
Some commentators believed that the 1981 election would mark an end to Muldoon's government.
