Biblical scholar, editor of Walton's Polyglot Bible, born at Seymour, or Seamer, near York, in 1600; died in London, 29 November, 1661.
Walton's Polyglot was the first book published by subscription in England.

Walton: Not really because whether you are up by 10 or down by 10 you still have to come out and play with intensity in the second half.
Walton: He said that it gets long and you have to do a bunch of things as a rookie, but just to know that you are going to have to do that and not to try to fight it at all or else the older guys are only going to make it worse.
Walton: He really only told me that every single game is going to be a war, and I kind of got that vibe from the guys on the team also.

 Brian Walton
Brian Walton (1600 - November 29, 1661), English divine and scholar, was born at Seymour, in the district of Cleveland, Yorkshire.
In the autumn of 1661 he paid a short visit to his diocese, and returning to London he died.
However much Walton was indebted to his helpers, the Polyglot Bible is a great monument of industry and of capacity for directing a vast undertaking, and the Prolegomena (separately reprinted by Dathe, 1777, and by Francis Wranghan, 1825) show judgment as well as learning.

Walton used the Introductio to respond to the critics of his Polyglot Bible and to justify the value of studying the text of scripture in ancient and oriental languages.
Walton’s project for a Polyglot Bible (catalogue no. 73) met with some early criticism in 1653—4 because of fears that the variant texts which it presented would undermine belief in the authority of the Bible.
Although he maintained a humanist faith in the possibility of establishing the true, authoritative text of scripture, Walton was thus sensitive to the differences between versions.

Walton is shown at work, with the sources of the Polyglot and several other major works of continental scholarship behind him.
Nevertheless, Walton’s response also underlined his own belief in the authority of scripture to determine the teaching of the Church, and his conviction that the literal sense was the best way of understanding the text of the Bible, once that had been established correctly.
For scholars like Walton and Owen, there was ultimately no alternative to a literal exegesis of scripture, even if they were willing to quarrel over the identity of the biblical text itself.
