Brian Douglas Wilson (born June 20, 1942, in Hawthorne, California) is an American pop musician, best known as a founding member of and the main producer, composer, and arranger for The Beach Boys.
Brian was a great admirer of Phil Spector and his studio work, and considered Spector both a mentor and one of his chief rivals.

It was then and there that nineteen-year-old Brian Douglas Wilson and his younger brothers Dennis and Carl assembled in their family's living room with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine to rehearse a little tune that Brian and Mike had written for a try-out recording session.
It was a unique fusion that Wilson had been tinkering with in the family garage where, inspired by The Four Freshman and their complex vocal blends, and armed with a multi-track tape recorder, he'd spent hours exploring the intricacies of harmony and melody.
But when the Beatles released their reflective Rubber Soul album, Wilson believed that the Beach Boys' sun-drenched poptopia would soon be eclipsed by artists who could produce entire albums of quality material, songs that conveyed a depth of experience and range of emotion previously off limits to rock and roll.

Music: Life of Brian (Nashville Scene . 07-27-98)
Brian Wilson is the very definition of a "troubled genius." In the tradition of Phil Spector, Wilson's prodigious talents as a songwriter, producer, arranger, and singer took his group, the Beach Boys, to the top of the music world before he'd even reached his 20th birthday.
His eponymous 1988 solo album showed flashes of brilliance, but the proceedings were undercut by the amateurish songwriting collaboration of Wilson's then-manager/psychiatrist, Dr. Eugene Landy.
The song, like the rest of the album, recalls some of Wilson's best work over the years: The Spector-esque "wall of sound" instrumentation is perfectly suited to the wonderfully over-the-top harmonies, which are all sung by Wilson.

Brian Wilson's first solo album created a good share of media hoopla upon its release.
However, the songs were not among Wilson's best either, their hooks pleasant but easily fading from memory, the lyrics full of ambiguous romantic optimism that was totally belied by the nervous, mannered vocals.
For all that, it remains the best album of Wilson's solo career, principally because he has recorded so little material since then, and written even less.

Though session players rounded out the instrumental tracks on many of the mid-‘60s era Beach Boys cuts, Brian was the man holding down the low end on all the Beach Boys live dates from the band's inception to his nerve-wracked “retirement” from the road in late 1964.

In late-1966, Brian Wilson attempted to follow perhaps the great American pop record, Pet Sounds, with what he felt could be the greatest piece of music the world had ever seen.
And for Brian Wilson, the end of SMiLE became the beginning of a severe decline in mental and physical health, seemingly draining whatever was left of one of the greatest American composers ever.
Until, with the help of touring band leader Darian Sahanaj and original lyricist Van Dyke Parks, Wilson was able to exorcise the negative connotations of the period and complete the most famous rock album never released.
