Paul Heaton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It had Dave Rotherway on lead guitar (who at the time bore a stunning resemblance to Stan Cullimore of The Housemartins), former Housemartins roadie Sean Welch on bass, David Stead on drums and probably most surprisingly Housemartins former drummer Dave Hemingway thrust forward to perform as a frontman.
In 1994 Briana Corrigan left the band and a new female vocalist Jackie Abbott was brought in.
During the recording of fourth album "Miaow" Heaton was increasingly irritated with the band and at one time told them to get their act together or he would leave.

Briana grew up in Northern Ireland, but left to study Creative Arts at Newcastle University aged 18.
She remained with the band until 1993, when she decided she had had enough of the laddish culture of the band, and was unhappy with the lyrics of some proposed new songs.
However, Briana felt she had not had enough time to finish her work properly, and she was proven right when the leading single stalled at No. 48 and the album, 'When My Arms Wrap You Round', failed to chart.

 Beautiful South: Article
With Hemingway, now a singer not a drummer, Corrigan, and Heaton, the band was able to move seamlessly through the vocal characterizations of three quite different lead vocalists.
"It was a case of rushing headlong into the recording of the song." Vocalist Corrigan refused to sing on the song and when she left the band after the album's release, rumors intimated that it was the sexist lyrics of "36D" that prompted her exit.
Corrigan said that may have been an impetus, but not the reason.

To complete the lineup, the pair hired former Anthill Runaways vocalist Briana Corrigan, bassist Sean Welch, drummer David Stead (formerly a Housemartins roadie), and guitarist David Rotheray, who became Heaton's new collaborator.
The Beautiful South released their third album, 0898, in 1992; it was their first record not to be released in the United States, yet it maintained their success in Britain.
Following the release of 0898, Briana Corrigan left the group, reportedly upset over some of Heaton's ironic lyrics.

They aren't nearly as jazzy as EbtG, as retro as the Cardigans, or as acerbic as the Beautiful South, but the four bands share a sonic clarity and an awareness that pop doesn't have to be overblown to be dramatic.
Briana Corrigan was a guest vocalist on the first Beautiful South record, and a full band member on Choke and 0898, before being replaced by Jacqueline Abbott for their final album, Miaow.
Briana's host of collaborators acquit themselves plausibly, but the Beautiful South had a nearly airtight ensemble dynamic that owed more than a little of its efficacy to the hints of Housemartins hyperactivity that glittered occasionally through the restrained facade, and here the playing is mostly as guileless as the lyrics.

As on last year's debut, Beautiful South (1989) songs tinker playfully with the formulae, conventions and cliches of pop songwriting-peer beneath the crystalline surface glow of those pop nuggets and you are confronted by a murky undertow of domestic violence, aberrant behaviour and more than a smidgeon of grim fl humour.
