Star Trek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Star Trek is an American science-fiction franchise spanning six television series and ten feature films (with an eleventh film currently in the early stages of development as of 2006), in addition to hundreds of novels, computer and video games, fan stories, and other works of fiction.
Star Trek II, IV, VI and Star Trek: First Contact are usually considered the fan-favorites, while Star Trek I and V are usually at the bottom (though I has since received quite a bit of positive re-evaluation in the wake of an acclaimed "Director's Edition" revision released on DVD).
Currently, Star Trek: Hidden Frontier which is a continuation of the timeline after the Dominion War from the perspective of a station and fleet in the Briar Patch, and Star Trek: New Voyages, a "continuation" of the original Star Trek, are prominent fan series.

Briar Patch (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Briar Patch is a fictional nebula in sector 441 in the Star Trek universe.
At least two inhabitable planets existed there, according to the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "The Augments" in which Arik Soong and his band of Augments attempted to reach the system and use it as a hideout.
Whether the Briar Patch seen in "The Augments" and later mentioned in "Blood Oath" was the same one seen in the film Star Trek: Insurrection is a source of confusion and disagreement among fans.

 Briar Patch - Memory Alpha
The Briar Patch or Klach D'Kel Brakt, which is its original Klingon name, is a region in Sector 441 containing dangerous space matter including the remains of supernovae, false vacuum fluctuations, metaphasic radiation and at least two habitable planets, one of which is a Ba'ku settlement.
The colloquial "Briar Patch" name used in the Federation was first coined by Arik Soong in the 22nd century, a reference to the Br'er Rabbit of the 1880s Uncle Remus stories written by Joel Chandler Harris of Earth.
In 2375, the Briar Patch was the scene of the Battle of the Briar Patch between the Federation starship USS Enterprise-E and Son'a ships, following the discovery of a plot to relocate the Ba'ku.

Star Trek: Insurrection - Memory Alpha
As the Enterprise arrives at the Briar Patch, the crew is met by Admiral Dougherty and the Son'a commander, Ahdar Ru'afo - a man, like his people, with obscenely stretched skin.
One of the early working titles for the film was Star Trek Nemesis, which went on to be the name of the tenth feature.
The Enterprise-E reception hall was a redress of the observation lounge from Star Trek: First Contact, which itself was a redress of the very same room from the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew discover that the Briar Patch (the area of space in which the planet Ba'ku is located) is filled with metaphasic radiation particles, which impart fountain of youth qualities that the Federation and the Son'a wish to harvest.
While it is never identified as such in the film, the operation in the Briar Patch is strongly reminiscent of tactics employed by the secret organization Section 31.
Armin Shimerman originally was to appear at the end as his Star Trek: Deep Space Nine character Quark; however, his one scene was cut as director Jonathan Frakes felt it did not fit in with the rest of the film.

The "Star Trek" films that I hold near and dear to my heart ("Wrath of Khan," "The Voyage Home," "First Contact") were first and foremost character studies rather than space operas.
I rediscovered "Star Trek" in the 1970s, and have been a fan ever since (although I'm not devoted enough to be a Trekker).
The Enterprise and its crew become involved when they arrive in the Briar Patch to retrieve Data, and become suspicious of the Federation's involvement with the Son'a, a dying alien race with an agenda all their own.

In late 2004, Scott Kenyon of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Benjamin Bromley from the University of Utah proposed a passing star long ago may have played a role in all this.
At a distance of 150-200 AU, the star could have stolen objects from the outer Kuiper Belt and lured Sedna into its present orbit without affecting Neptune or the inner planets, the researchers concluded through computer modeling.
Intriguingly, the model suggests some KBOs in our solar system (not including Sedna) are actually alien worlds that were captured from the passing star in a two-way swap of material.

The Comcast-owned cable network is close to acquiring the syndication rights to the original "Star Trek" and one of its spinoffs, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" from Paramount Domestic Television, sources said.
"Trek" has been a syndication fixture since the first edition blossomed there after its brief network run in the late '60s.
Sources also suggest that "Trek" will be part of a Comcast effort next year to reposition the channel brand of G4, which struggled to establish itself as the TV home for video gamers, in a broader play for young male viewers.
