 Wedding Traditions: A Cultural History
A variant on the theme of bride purchase is the reputed practice of "bride capture." A traditional ritual (Umykannia) at Ukrainian weddings involves a mock abduction of the bride and a skirmish between the families of the bride and groom.
Although for Americans covering the bride's face with a veil has come to represent innocence and purity, the practice was originally used in other cultures as protection from harm or molestation and was one of many rituals adopted out of concern for the happiness, safety, and fertility of the bride and groom.
For example, in China the bride, heavily veiled, walked gingerly in her father's shoes to the bridal sedan, and in Western societies it is customary for the groom to carry the bride over the threshhold.

Any children born by the couple before payment is completed are considered to belong to the bride's father's clan and may remain with this party unless an alternative agreement is reached in which the groom works for his bride's father for several years in place of a bride price.
The figure paid as a bride price is a subject of strenuous negotiation and may vary depending upon regional differences, the economic means of the families involved and the personal characteristics of the bride.
It is rare for a boy's father to lose face by refusing to pay the bride price, which may be delayed with the agreement of the two parties, mandating that his son work for his wife's father.

In the rush of it all, a bride is often at the mercy of friends, relatives, coordinators and etiquette books as to the "proper" traditions to have at her Big Event.
And since a bride gets married only once – or twice – in her lifetime, she’s usually not the expert when it comes to all the traditions, customs, and trends in a wedding.
Most brides want their wedding to be recognizable as a wedding – complete with a dress that lets guests know she’s the bride, and a ceremony and traditions that make the whole day feel "official." For some women, this is easy.
