  Bridge Building
Bridges must be built strong enough to safely support their own weight as well as the weight of the people and vehicles that pass over it.
The student is to build the longest non-supported single span bridge possible using one sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper.
Bridges have been an essential part of transportation for hundreds of years, and it is the job of civil engineers to design the safest, most durable bridges possible.

Bridges - their structure and function
Building a structure is often a source of difficulty and danger, sometimes from unexpected conditions or phenomena.
Looking at real buildings is of course far more interesting than looking at a site like this, and a visit to any place can be more rewarding if an effort is made to look at buildings, not just as a whole, but in detail: not just in appearance, but in structure.
Around the world there is an immense diversity of buildings, creativity being limited only by the laws of physics and the available materials (and local traditions and building regulations).

The beam or truss bridge is, in effect, a pair of girders supporting a deck spanning the gap between two piers.
The bridle-chord bridge is a combination of a long beam (usually a trussed girder) partially supported by steel wires from a tower at one end, or from towers at each end.
Most cantilever bridges are designed so that a gap remains between two cantilevered arms that reach out from their abutments: the gap is bridged by a simple beam.

SCDOT - Cooper River Bridge - Building the Bridge   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The Grace Memorial Bridge carried traffic for seventy six years and had two narrow 10-foot lanes, did not have any shoulders, and was limited to carrying vehicles weighing less than five tons.
Because of the weight limit on the Grace Bridge, all Charleston bound heavy trucks, recreational vehicles, and busses were diverted to the single southbound lane on the Pearman Bridge.
For years there had been a need to replace the Cooper River Bridges, but this effort would not have been possible without partnerships to design and build the new bridge and especially the innovative partnerships to fund the project.
