The bridge was built by the County Commissioners in 1873 as part of the county Highway system for traffic from the Lincoln Highway to Somerset.
The Stoystown Lions purchased the bridge from the Specht Heirs in 1963.
The Bridge was rededicated on Sept. 18, 1996.

The Bridge of Lions seems to be disappearing as of late.
After each 120-foot to 240-foot arched girder is removed from the bridge and carefully placed on a barge, it is ferried to shore and set atop a specially designed and permitted truck to be shipped to Lakeland.
Once the renewed foundation for the Bridge of Lions is complete, the rehabilitated steel girders will be brought back to St. Augustine and placed into their original locations supporting the bridge structure.

This project explores the potential of reclaiming urban structures built for cars, and returning them to pedestrians through parks and green space.
This bridge in Vancouver was going to be torn down, and a new crossing built beside it or a tunnel under it.
Being that this structure was very much a symbol of the city I wanted to maintain it's form, but create a pedestrian garden spanning it.
