The Bridge at No Gun Ri
It was a story no one wanted to hear: Early in the Korean War, villagers said, American soldiers machine-gunned hundreds of helpless civilians, under a railroad bridge in the South Korean countryside.
Teen-aged riflemen and young officers with no combat experience were thrust overnight into a hellish war, told to expect guerrilla fighting and be wary of the tens of thousands of South Korean civilians pouring south with retreating Americans.
But old soldiers in their late 60s or 70s identified the No Gun Ri bridge from photographs, remembered the approximate dates, and corroborated the core of the Koreans’ account: that American troops kept the refugees pinned under the bridge in late July 1950, and killed almost all of them.

Executive Summary :: South Fork Merced River Bridge Replacement Project
The South Fork Bridge was constructed in 1931 as a triple-span, steel-girder, deck bridge supported by spread concrete footings, two unreinforced cement rubble in-stream piers, and two unreinforced cement rubble abutments.
The structural integrity and safety of the bridge was further degraded by the January 1997 flood, which increased scouring around the piers and abutments.
Controlled bridge removal and construction of a single-span bridge would restore the free-flowing condition to the South Fork of the Merced River, thereby enhancing both its biologic and hydrologic integrity.
