Bridge and Tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bridge and Tunnel was also the name of a one-woman off-broadway show, in which all of the parts were performed by stage actress Sarah Jones, who explored the diverse immigrant makeup of the outer boroughs by playing a variety of different characters, each of a different race.
Bridge and tunnel (often abbreviated to BandT) is a derogatory term used by residents of Manhattan to refer to the large amount of people who commute into the borough from the nearby area, both for work and for the New York nightlife.
This is mostly to avoid the crowds associated with the huge influx of bridge and tunnel commuters on weekends.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel spans a 23 mile (37 km) section of the Bay at near its mouth.
The Chesapeake Bay was the site of the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781, during which the French fleet defeated the Royal Navy in the decisive naval battle of the American Revolutionary War.
In the 1970s, the Chesapeake Bay contained one of the planet's first identified marine dead zones, where hypoxic waters were so depleted in oxygen they were unable to support life, identified when massive fish kills resulted.

The North Approach Bridge connects to the North Island (actually a peninsula) where the north portal of the tunnel is. In the distance, you can see the South Island and the South Trestle.
The tunnel is 4,800 feet long from portal to portal, and it was built by the immersed sunken tube method, comprised of 15 prefabricated segments each 300 feet long and with two 2-lane bores, placed by lay-barges and joined together in a trench dredged in the bottom of the harbor, and backfilled over with earth.
The traffic lanes in the tunnel are 13 feet wide, with 2.5-foot-wide ledges on either side of the roadway, and with 16.5 feet of vertical clearance from the roadway to the ceiling.

The Snowden Lift Bridge crossing the Missouri River 10 miles north of Fairview is a twin to the Fairview Lift Bridge.
Unlike the Fairview Lift Bridge, the Snowden Lift Bridge is uniquely designed in a fashion that the counterweights and accompanying lift mechanisms can be moved to another section of the bridge should the navigation channel of the river shift.
After nearly a century, (although no longer operational on either bridge) the equipment required to lift the bridge sections remain fully intact minus the 3-cylinder kerosene engine from the Fairview Lift Bridge, which was removed several years ago.

The initial feasibility studies for the Bridge-Tunnel also proposed a future bridge branching from the center portion of the Bridge-Tunnel to the city of Hampton, and this was never built.
The existing 2-lane tunnel would be abandoned after the opening of the new 4-lane tunnel, and it would be allowed to remain in place until such time as the channel deepening project came to dredge the 63-foot-deep channel; and at that time the obstructing portion of the old tunnel would be demolished and removed.
The portals of the tunnels are anchored on man-made islands constructed in 35 to 45 feet of water, and these islands provide a transition from the trestle roadway to the tunnel tubes.

The panel concluded that AASHTO and the FHWA, which already maintain lists of bridges and tunnels and their conditions, should be charged with assessing the risks to individual bridges and that input should be solicited from state departments of transportation (DOTS) and from other independent agencies and authorities that own bridges and tunnels.
Clearly, then, the panel concluded that the bridges and tunnels with the greatest symbolic value would be obvious choices as targets of terrorism, but many other structures are at risk as well.
Additionally, bridges are seen as facing a greater risk of attack because of their visibility and, in some cases, their role as cultural icons.
