South Shetland Islands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Islands are still claimed by the original three nations: Argentina claims the Islands as part of Argentine Antarctica; Chile claims the Islands as part of Antártica Chilena Province; and the United Kingdom maintains a claim as part of the British Antarctic Territory.
British explorer William Smith arrived to the islands on 19 February 1819, while cruising close to the northern edge of the islands, and claimed in the name of King George III, disembarking on the largest of the South Shetlands, King George Island by the same man on 16 October that year.

The uninhabited island, long used as a military target range, is being cleared of ordnance under a $1.6 million Navy contract.
The island has been divided into 640 grids, and sweep teams of hard-hat workers headed by bomb disposal experts cover the area with metal detectors, marking each discovered target.
Surprisingly, the island does not appear to be pock marked with craters, although the remains of sea buoys brought ashore as land-based targets is testimony to some of the accuracy of the Navy and Air Force aircraft that used the target range over the years.

PROVENANCE AND CORRELATION OF VOLCANICLASTIC MATERIAL FROM THE BRANSFIELD BASIN, ANTARCTICA: PRELIMINARY RESULTS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Deception Island has been the most active of these centers in historic times, with more than a dozen documented or suspected eruptions since 1800; the most recent documented eruption occurred in 1970.
In addition, the Basin is also characterized by a number of submarine volcanic centers that are located along a spreading ridge stretching from Deception Island to Bridgeman Island.
Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to determine the provenance for many samples, at least in the broad sense of delineating a compositional correlation between an individual layer and the published range of materials produced from individual volcanic sources.

It was designed by Charles Bridgeman as a dramatic eye-catching feature to complement a round pond, or bason, formed in the valley below and was never intended for theatrical performances.
William Kent, who followed Bridgeman as landscape architect at Claremont, left the amphitheatre untouched but in the 1770s such formal features were out of fashion so it was planted up.
In the 1730s, Kent enlarged Bridgeman's round pond, giving it a more natural shape and included an island and Pavilion.
