Bridgeport's fears were exacerbated by the fact that the population in the fl ghetto was expanding rapidly as a result of migration from the South.
Despite the legal prohibitions, enough fugitive slaves followed the Underground Railroad to Chicago in the 1840s and 1850s that it came to be known among pro-slavery polemicists as a "sink hole of abolition." By the 1870s, Illinois fls had the franchise, and in 1876 Chicago sent a fl representative to the Illinois legislature.
Bridgeport was a major center of riot activity: by one estimate, 41 percent of all the encounters occurred in and around Daley's neighborhood.

 Bridgeport: Ethnic Villages
Bridgeport was one of the earliest German settlements in northern Illinois; although little has been documented in regard to Bridgeport Germans, since the West side and especially North side German neighborhoods of Chicago were larger.
Bridgeport is different, though, in that the primary ethnic groups remained in the community and their lots improved over time.
South of Bridgeport the gangs tended to be a bit rougher, and their contests with the Douglas neighborhood gangs to the east are thought to have pre-heated the race riot that broke out (on the lake front) in 1919.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.---The Chicago Wolves tied the game with three seconds remaining in regulation and won, 5-4, in overtime against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in Game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals last night at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
Chicago took the first lead of the game, 1-0, when Karlsson hustled to dig the puck out from behind the net and flipped it to Brown, who found left wing Steve Maltais waiting unguarded in front of the crease.
Chicago padded its lead, 2-0, on the power play when Brown laced a no-look pass from the boards to Maltais, who redirected the puck past DiPietro at 9:34 of the opening frame.
