The Rolling Stones: Bridges to Babylon Tour (1997)
The Stones have captured their record reaching "Bridges to Babylon Live" show onto a rockin' two hour video.
Rolling Stones: Bridges to Babylon Tour ’97-‘98 appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; as such, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
That said, the Bridges to Babylon DVD is actually quite a step up from the more heavily edited Stones concerts presented on home video in the past.

Bridges To Babylon is an intimate little show featuring the band, accompanied by Darryl Jones on bass performing a stripped down set, on a modest stage, in front of a few thousand......awww, who the hell am I kidding here!!
This turns out to be the end of a massive hydraulic bridge that is now expanding out over the audience and eventually connects to a small satellite stage out in the middle of the arena, allowing the band to casually stroll across the bridge to the awaiting stage.
After this brief two song performance, over the bridge (I'm sure it was longer during the concert), the band strolled back across the bridge to the main stage to finish off the second half of the show.

The group's current "Bridges to Babylon "show, larger and more impressive technically than the decaying world of the "Steel Wheels " tour and the exotic parlor of "Voodoo Lounge, " is a trip into an otherworld where the still- frenetic Mick Jagger and company can cavort on an arresting Imax level.
Among the tour mementos on sale were more than a dozen Bridges to Babylon T-shirts and sweat shirts, as well as framed and unframed lithographs of the artwork from various Stones' album covers.
And for those fans lacking that special wardrobe item to wear while viewing their official Stones lithograph from their official Stones chair, a leather Bridges to Babylon tour jacket could be purchased for only $400.

 Bridges to Babylon
Transforming this recurring Zeitgeist into a powerful visual form that could be communicated to an audience led Fisher towards ideas of opulence and flamboyance, and in particular to examples of excessive architectural ornamentation that often accompany power and wealth.
The title "Bridges to Babylon" suggested the transportation of the audience to a mythical place synonymous with both luxury and vice; the precise conditions that produce an atmosphere of decadence.
The pictures were taken in London in August 1997 at the workshop of the fabricator, Brilliant Stages Ltd., whilst the bridge was being load tested before it was shipped to the USA for the tour.

The Rolling Stones are back on the music scene with their latest album, Bridges To Babylon and accompanying world tour, and the question that comes to mind is, "Should anybody really care about this aging rock band anymore?".
Bridges To Babylon opens up with "Flip The Switch", a off-the-rack Stones rocker which would have fit nicely onto their last release, Voodoo Lounge.
Two of the stronger numbers on Bridges are the ballads penned and sang by Richards, the tender "Thief In The Night" and the Motown inspired "How Can I Stop", which also features a wonderful drum / sax interplay between Watts and jazz great Wayne Shorter.

Bridges To Babylon is bringing the great sounds and musical ideas of Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Goats Head Soup and Black And Blue into a new and strange sound, with brilliant mixes, clear guitars, and riffs that are close to parodies of their own, without really overdoing it.

Bridges To Babylon by Rolling Stones CD
BRIDGES TO BABYLON was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album.
Kicking off with Charlie Watt's whip-smart timekeeping, BRIDGES TO BABYLON finds the Rolling Stones swaggering towards the millennium with a record that confidently asserts that rock & roll is far from a young person's game.
With those two out of the way, though, Bridges To Babylon is pure Stones goodness as only the Stones can produce.

Bridges to Babylon: The Rolling Stones' tour connects stadium rock to operatic extravagance
Before Bridges to Babylon had been adopted as the record's title, Fisher had already sketched out a bridge as a means of getting the band to the second stage they wanted to have.
When the bridge arrived 10 shows in and made its debut in Charlotte, NC, the LD had a new challenge to tackle.
Cantilevering out from the center of the 200'-long (60m) main stage, the bridge extends 120' (36m) out to the stadium's center, where a 20' (6m) square platform rises up from the field to meet it.

Bridges to Babylon by The Rolling Stones
With its successor, Bridges to Babylon, Mick Jagger was determined to bring the Rolling Stones into the '90s, albeit tentatively, and hired hip collaborators like the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys) and Danny Saber (Black Grape) to give the veteran group an edge on their explorations of drum loops and samples.
As a result, Bridges to Babylon sounds like the Stones without sounding tired.

The visual twists are at once spectacular and conservative: a cyclopean main stage design with massive pillars (presumably the Babylonian connection), a vast oval video screen (shades of Big Brother), and a hydraulic bridge enabling a midconcert sortie into the audience, with the Stones playing a more stripped-down, intimate set on a small satellite stage.
That huge physical setting doubtless made the live shows eye-filling rock spectacles, but the video crew necessarily accepts the limitations of the small screen, focusing more on close-ups of the band, rapid cuts, and racing, hand-held tracking shots to convey excitement while keeping the viewer close to the action.
Although I would give 'Voodoo Lounge' concert DVD a slight edge, (I mean a very very slight edge) over Babylon, trust me, this is a must have DVD that will, like Voodoo, go out of print and you'll be buying the DVD for 50.00 bucks just to have it in your collection......

The Rolling Stones - Bridges to Babylon
On the ballads, Jagger abandons his overwrought Freejack action-figure persona for the more plausible role of used, abandoned lover on "Already Over Me" and "Always Suffering." "Out of Control" and "Saint of Me" benefit from both dynamics and crunchy hooks.
Interestingly, the most successful fast number is "Too Tight," a throwaway rave-up a la "Hand of Fate." It works because Jagger deliberately undersings and lets the guitars do the talking.
BTB is a pleasant surprise--just make sure to start on track four.
