Inside, the central focal point of the hall is a magnificent 5,500 pipe (A fully differentiated structural and functional unit in an animal that is specialized for some particular function) organ which dominates the 2,400 seat auditorium, completely covering the rear wall with a beautiful blend of wood and burnished metal.

Hallé was a German merchant who settled in the city; he was very popular and when he died 40,000 people lined the route of his funeral cortege.
For many years the Hallé used the Free Trade Hall as their home but in 1996 moved into their brand new purpose-built hall, designed by Nicholas Thompson.

By 1850 there were two settlements, River Raisin and Bridgewater.

THEY came to hear a programme of solid Brahms, but I would guess that the audience which heard Maxim Vengerov last night will, in most cases, remember his electrifying encores for longer.

But the fugue is handled beautifully with a sense of urgency and excitement permeating the texture throughout, with well-chosen registrations that show off the Bridgewater Hall instrument magnificently.
The sad thing is that unless one is prepared to put aside the poor recording quality and general lack of polish, this is not a disc that can be heartily recommended.

MARK ELDER'S interpretations of Beethoven symphonies have been eye-openers ever since he took over at the Hallé, and last night's start of the Opus One series gave us his reading of the Eroica.
Intriguingly, as his no. 4 revealed a revolutionary side to the one often thought suave and undramatic, so his reading of the no. 3 revolutionary symphony par excellence brought out qualities of lightness and grace often obscured by more portentous approaches.
Just as well they played the National Anthem first as HRH the Earl and Countess of Wessex were present as guests of the Hallé committee or those drumrolls would have had us on our feet anyway.
