Brie British Cemetery, Brie, Somme, France
Brie is a village on the N29 Amiens-St Quentin road.
On 18-20 March 1917, Commonwealth troops repaired the bridge and took the village of Brie during the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line.
The cemetery was begun by Commonwealth units after the second occupation of the village and taken over by the 5th, 47th and 48th Casualty Clearing Stations, which were posted at Brie in September and October before being moved on along the St. Quentin road to Bihecourt, near Vermand.

Little opposition was met, and by the 16th March we held the western half of Moislains Wood, the whole of St. Pierre Vaast Wood with the exception of its north-eastern corner, and the enemy's front trenches as far as the northern outskirts of Sailly-Saillisel.
Next day considerable bodies of infantry and cavalry crossed to the east of the Somme, and a line of cavalry outposts with infantry in support was established from south of Germaine, where we were in touch with the French, through Hancourt and Nurlu to Bus.
The bridging of the Somme at Brie, to which reference has already been made, is an example of the nature of the obstacles with which our troops were met and of the rapidity with which those obstacles were overcome.

The long periods of trench warfare and the struggles of battle in 1916 and 1918 caused terrible destruction in the Somme; even in the area behind the lines, the constant use by troops and the demands of managing the war left disruption, piles of war materials, hutted camps and hospitals, all the detritus of war.
In some cases the link was sustained after the war with aid programmes to help the stricken communities return to normality.
Most of the department of the Somme was occupied and devastated during the war years, 1914-1918.
