Brigadier Gerard is an officer in Napoleon’s army — recklessly brave, engagingly openhearted, and unshakable, if not a little absurd, in his devotion to the enigmatic Emperor.
Brigadier Gerard is everything that a Briton of Conan Doyle's time thought was an exemplar of the Napoleonic officer - and to a certain extent a charicature of the French themselves.
Gerard is a wonderful comic character, in his own not so humble opinion the foremost rider and swordsmen in all the Grand Armeé, he's also a favorite of the ladies, a stickler on points of honor, first volunteer for hazardous missions-and unbeknownst to him, marvelously thickheaded.

Conan Doyles inspiration for Brigadier Gerard was the famous Baron de Marbot.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Brigadier Gerard stories surely constitute the finest series of historical short stories in literature, mingling the comedy and the tragedy, the pathos and the irony, or, in Napoleon's phrase, the sublime with the ridiculous.

When compared to Brigadier Gerard, I feel it is unfair to rate the Brigadier ahead as though he has the best British racing record of 17 wins out of 18 (a record 15 consecutive wins!), his performances were phenomenal only upto a mile.

Gerard is a very different character than Holmes, but the characterization is just as brilliant.
Just as with his more famous counterpart(Holmes), Gerard is not just a hero(although there can be no questioning his bravery),he can also be a clown,(without ever realizing it)a ladies man, the greatest swordsman in the Grande' Armee(or at least so he tells us).
He quite often bumbles his way into situations an officer of his rank should never allow himself into yet, it is these situations once gotten out of(after much daring and a little bit of luck)that build not only his career but, the readers passion for his character.

The "Exploits and Adventures of Birgadier Gerard" is surely one of the finest novels about the Napoleonic era and I highly recommend it to any fan of the Grand Armee and its battle hardened soldiers.
The story begins with the long retired Brigadier starting to recall his war memories for the shake of his audience, over a glass of wine.
Although we are invited to laugh (and frequently do) at the brigadier's bluster and egotism, Conan Doyle never stoops to making his character a figure of simple mockery but instead treads a fine line between satire and affection.

ACD has created in Gerard a character that by all rights should be up there with the greats of literary fiction...I would say that it is only due to the huge popularity of Sherlock Holmes that this is not the case.
The humour is there as Gerard embarks on an impromptu fox hunt with a host of British officers with ACD managing to poke fun at both the French and British in the same few sentences.
This edition, as the title suggests contains the complete collection of Gerard short stories and is a must have for any fans of the Flashman or Sharpe novels, indeed anyone who is interested a good novel with excellent characterisations.
