Discovering Leeds - Briggate   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Briggate is a wide street running north to south through the centre of Leeds.
Hidden behind the façade of merchants houses and elegant shop fronts were the inn yards and courts of Briggate, where people lived and worked in small shops and workshops, and where conditions were overcrowded and squalid.
This is the story of how Briggate was created, and how it has become what it is to-day.

Schofields (department store) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the opening of the new Schofields in 1990 it was decided that the supposedly temproary store on Briggate would be retained and be known as Rackhams (another trading name used by House of Fraser).
The Briggate store is now known simply as House of Fraser and the former Schofields which the Schofields Centre had became known as The Headrow Centre had been occupied by Lillywhites sportswear retailer between 1996 and 2001 and is now occupied by several chain stores including Sports World, New Look and Toyworld Megastore.
The only visible evidence pointing to the existence of Schofields is an NCP multi storey car park located near to the former department store on Albion Street that continues to use the name of 'Schofields Car Park' despite the demise of this department store.

At the northern end of Briggate, at right angles to it was the Head Row, so-called because of its situation at the 'Head' of the town.
From the junction with Briggate the street slopes downwards to the east towards Lady Bridge over Sheepscar Beck, where it becomes 'the Street', the road leading eastwards to York.
The 1560 map shows that unlike Briggate, which had deliberately been made wide enough to accommodate the market, the Head Row was very narrow.

The challenge was held as part of The Big Draw, a day-long national event organised by the Campaign for Drawing, to demonstrate how drawing connects generations and cultures and makes us see, think, invent and act.

The accounting software I bought with the computer seemed totaly unrelated to the business I was running so I started to develop my own using Dbase II and Wordstar I put together an invoicing and accounting program.
