Originally called ‘Five Steps Ahead’, it was designed to identify the areas in which New Zealand innovation could be under threat, including its tall poppy syndrome (additional info and facts about tall poppy syndrome).
However, after the 1999 General Election (A national or state election; candidates are chosen in all constituencies), ‘Bright Future’ was scrapped, with the succeeding Labour government (additional info and facts about Labour government) having considered it electioneering.

But on the bright side (wait for it) gay has inspired a new imitator, which is the climax of this article.
Brights constitute 60% of American scientists, and a stunning 93% of those scientists good enough to be elected to the elite National Academy of Sciences (equivalent to Fellows of the Royal Society) are brights.
Of course, even though we brights will scrupulously insist that our word is a noun, if it catches on it is likely to follow gay and eventually re-emerge as a new adjective.

 THE THIRD CULTURE - BRIGHT!!
The term "bright" is a recent coinage by two brights in Sacramento, Calif., who thought our social group -- which has a history stretching back to the Enlightenment, if not before -- could stand an image-buffing and that a fresh name might help.
We are, in fact, the moral backbone of the nation: brights take their civic duties seriously precisely because they don't trust God to save humanity from its follies.
Whether we brights are a minority or, as I am inclined to believe, a silent majority, our deepest convictions are increasingly dismissed, belittled and condemned by those in power -- by politicians who go out of their way to invoke God and to stand, self-righteously preening, on what they call "the side of the angels."

Bright Future has monsters, ghosts and murders, and you can feel the Horror seething and bubbling underneath a number of scenes (largely thanks to Asano's sublime acting).

Japanese Movie Review | Bright Future (2003) Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Tadanobu Asano
As such, "Bright Future" is not too much of a departure, being a surreal, almost dream-like tale of urban disillusionment and malaise, played out through the bizarre metaphor of poisonous jellyfish.
"Bright Future" is a film of quiet anger, of uncaring characters trying to find their place in a modern society which they have little in common with.
As a result, the personal journeys undertaken in "Bright Future" are neither comfortable nor obvious, and Kurosawa thankfully steers clear of the clichés of angst-ridden cinema, dealing with the intangible rather than the usual whining of materialistic 20-somethings which tend to populate such films.

Akarui mirai (2003)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
from Queens, NY "Bright Future (Akarui mirai)" feels very much like a Sam Shephard play, with its themes of stifling fathers and rebelling sons and sibling responsibility between brothers, all suffused with irrational violence.
The characters seem to need to strike out with either Raskolnikov-ian or manipulative acts of violence as existential acts to affect their environment ("acclimating to Tokyo" is how one character metaphorically puts it) to be sure they're alive or having an impact on the living.
I'm quite sure I didn't get anywhere near all the Goddard-ian symbolism, from the production design of the characters' seedy living arrangements to the phosphorescent beauty of poisonous jellyfish, which are used beyond the frogs in "Magnolia" in entrancing and haunting images like Conrad's fascination of the abomination.

The future doesn't seem so bright for Yuji Niimura (Jo Odagiri) and Mamoru Arita (Tadanobu Asano), two blue-collar workers stuck in dead end jobs at a washcloth factory.

Today we begin an 8-week series called “The Bible and the Future.”  As you may know, the future is a hot topic today on Christian broadcasting and in Christian books.
That’s what Paul was trying to tell us when he said “we know in part and we prophesy in part, and we see but a poor reflection in the mirror.”  God has given us a view of the future, and that future is bright and that future is certain.
Even though our understanding of life and the future is hazy, there are certain things “we can hang our hats on.”  Because we see through a glass dimly, we live by faith.

KUROSAW Kiyoshi's latest film "bright future" (2002) could be described as a portrayal of a young man coming of age suffused with a dark allure, while the second half of the film focuses on the generation gap.
And yet it is equally obvious that he would never resort to the cynical irony of calling a "dark" future "bright".
In 2003, "bright future" was selected into the official competition at the Cannes International Film Festival.

village voice > film > Bright Future by Michael Atkinson
Beloved internationally as a classy pulp-meister, Kiyoshi Kurosawa has been, I think, largely misread—it may be more accurate and entertaining to consider him a neo-surrealist, the only working filmmaker with a sensibility that concisely echoes the cool, irrational voice of Luis Buñuel.
Still, Bright Future can be off-putting—neither of the two protagonists attempt to engage the camera, and more woe is expended on mourning Mamoru than considering his victims, leaving the transcendental flights of the jellyfish metaphor something less than dazzling.
But Kurosawa is certainly not thinking in terms of bourgeois values or character empathy—in the 11th hour, his film diverts its gaze to an odd youth gang outfitted in starched white Che T-shirts rousing themselves from disillusioned torpor, and in a stirring traveling shot, hunting for relevance and confrontation in the streets.

 Bright Future - Review
On the contrary, schools of jellyfish floating on the rivers in Tokyo in bright future are literally “monsters.” Their luminous shapes coming out of darkness are starkly beautiful, but they can never be cute.
The “bright future” defined by Kurosawa can only be born only after you admit the existence of the incomprehensible monsters as they are, not as their useful tools or trying to eliminate them.
It seems to me that bright future is Kurosawa’s romantic movie he challenges to create for the first time or after many years.
