Brightling Needle - a 40 ft high obelisk built on the top of the hill at Brightling, used as a beacon point during the Napoleonic Wars, and now by the ordinance survey as the second highest point in Sussex.
The area under Brightling is a rich source of Gypsum, which is mined under the hills, and transported to Mountfield for processing via a 5 mile long conveyor belt, resembling a giant centipede.
Brightling as a small hamlet has few local services, with the exception of the St Thomas a Becket C.E. church.

In 1780, at the age of 22, Jack Fuller was elected to Parliament.
In 1811, a pyramid-shaped building, often referred to as "the Pyramid", was erected in the churchyard of the Church of St. Thomas a Becket, Brightling (sic[3]?) as a future mausoleum for Jack Fuller.
In 1828, he financed the building of the Belle Tout lighthouse, on the cliff at Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, and it was built in 1832(?), replacing the wooden structure that was there previously[4].

Eccentricity is a curious feature that is present in varying degrees in all races, however it seems to have had a special place with the British, hence the profusion of follies around the country.
Mad Jack saw nothing wrong with this aspect of his life, and indeed later found himself being physically ejected from the Houses of Parliament, after an exchange with the Speaker of the House in a debate over the abolition of slavery in February 1810.
Locally he provided funding for the 'Belle Tout' lighthouse, and a large barrel organ at Brightling church (said to be the largest working example in the UK to this day), saved nearby Bodium castle from demolition and also found time to build some interesting follies that are shown below.

On Thursday, September 18, 1828, Jack Fuller bought Bodiam Castle for 3000 guineas at auction to save it from destruction.On the afternoon of Friday, April 11, 1834, Fuller died at his home, 36 Devonshire Place, London.
He was buried in the Pyramid in Brightling churchyard.The main beneficiary of his will was his nephew, Peregrine Palmer Fuller Palmer Acland (1789-1871).

They crossed the gallops and into the novice event course water jump, which they took in grand style except for one tailender, who went to launch over the jump, realised there was a steep drop into the water and put on the brakes, landing straddling the fence.
They hunted on through the plough with a minor diversion on the footpath and crossed the road, jumping back into the park.
They then crossed the Brightling Road into Mr Young's, jumping out of the paddocks just below the Sugar Loaf, another of Jack Fuller's follies, onto Mr Robinson's land.
