  Brightness Reef Review
Brightness Reef is the latest of David Brin`s "Uplift" series of novels, which began with his first novel, Sundiver, originally published in 1980.
Brightness Reef is a new departure for the "Uplift" series.
I enjoyed the book a lot, but certainly I anticipate the subsequent volumes eagerly, and many might wish to wait until the whole trilogy is at hand.

UKFDB - Book Details - Brightness Reef
BRIGHTNESS REEF is the compelling story of a world threatened by its past and fighting for its future.
With a gallery of extraordinary characters, and a wealth of thought-provoking ideas, it is a novel fuelled by the spirit of adventure and discovery.
BRIGHTNESS REEF is David Brin at his very best.

Brightness Reef: This is definitely not a happy book.
As it is, the book doesn't stand on its own, but depends on (wait for it) "Heaven's Reach" to actually provide a conclusion, and that conclusion isn't nearly as satisfying as the one suggested herein - certainly not as good as it should be considering the length of the journey.
David Brin's Brightness Reef centers around the planet Jijo and the six species of intelligent beings that have unlawfully settled on it.

Add to that the sheer fun Brin has with his many alien races, and with the human race as the brash new kid on the block.
Brightness Reef ranks with Startide Rising in taking advantage of the strengths of the Uplift universe.
Bringing together the six groups of exiles on Jijo was a brilliant way to combine a diverse group of aliens in an unusual setting.

Languages in David Brin's Uplift universe
It isn't necessary for you to try to understand exactly what that means (you're human, after all ), but trying to put Trinary dialogue in the forum of rhyme, or free-verse poetry, conveys something of the feel and difficulty of expressing technical terms.
In "Brightness Reef" it is a formal tongue favored by the humans of Jijo.
The only example I found was in Brightness Reef where a human tracker is speaking with a member of a devolved race that is now effectively pre-sentient, so the simplicity of the dialogue below doesn't necessarily reflect a normal GalEight conversation.

 David Brin: Brightness Reef
I'm not really sure why this is the case, the concepts of the Uplift Galaxies are intriguing and the plots are just as good as those which Brin wrote in Earth and Glory Season, but for some reason, Sundiver, Startide Rising and The Uplift War didn't grip me as strongly.
Brightness Reef is the opening of a trilogy of books set on the planet Jijo.
Until the story is complete, it is rather difficult to see how well Brightness Reef will stand up against Brin's other novels, but I do hope the remaining books can pick up the pace.

 Raven's Reviews: David Brin
In chronological order within the novels, these are: Sundiver, Startide Rising, The Uplift War, Brightness Reef, Infinity's Shore, and Heaven's Reach (on a side note, I love his titles, and the poetry in the books that they come from).
The daughter of the Timbrimi ambassador (a race which is actually friendly towards mankind, if overly fond of practical jokes) is caught up in trying to find and hide the secrets humanity has hidden on the planet, and in the process learns more about herself and about what humans are capable of.
The last three (Brightness Reef, Infinity's Shore, and Heaven's Reach) are a continuous trilogy, about a planet where refugees from six races have landed illegally and are hiding from the rest of the galaxy.

SCIENCE FICTION -- Galactic Fugitives, Rogue Androids and Cyberpunks
``Brightness Reef'' boils with plots and subplots, told from a wide variety of perspectives.
Some readers may find the complexity of ``Brightness Reef'' exhilarating, while others will grow impatient with Brin's tendency to shoot off in four directions at once every time there's a plot twist.
Unlike ``Sundiver,'' ``Startide Rising'' and ``The Uplift War,'' the first set of ``Uplift'' novels, ``Brightness Reef'' isn't meant to be self-contained.

 David Brin: Infinity's Shore
The action is very much a continuation of the actions which occurred in Brightness Reef as the members of the six races continue to deal with the aftermath of the Rothen visitors and the arrival of Streaker.
In addition to the characters and races from Brightness Reef, Infinity's Shore also re-introduces many of the characters from Startide Rising, making the novel, in effect, a direct sequel to both novels instead of one.
In Brightness Reef, Brin introduced the six races, and I commented that only the traeki seems to be more than humans in funny costumes.

 David Brin, Heaven's Reach
This series, the earlier segments of which are Brightness Reef (1995) and Infinity’s Shore (1996), comes to over 1800 pages; and yet it is merely a sequel to an earlier Uplift Trilogy, made up of Sundiver (1980), Startide Rising (1983), and The Uplift War (1987).
Yet curiously, Brin chose in Brightness Reef to move from cosmic pandaemonium to quiet pastoral: Jijo, an isolated low-technology world, where human and alien refugees have constructed a novel, ecologically responsible, harmonious civilization.
In the details of this, the series lags for a while, suffering a near-fatal loss of its characteristic breakneck momentum; but in Infinity’s Shore, the old pace is regained, as the Uplift War reaches Jijo, and Streaker reappears.
