 Brighton - Tasmania - Australia - Travel - theage.com.au
Brighton, a pleasant seaside resort town on the southern coast of England, can surely have very few similarities with Brighton, a military post, 27 km north of Hobart.
The area around Brighton was first explored by Europeans in early 1804 and by 1806, with serious food shortages in Hobart Town, expeditions of soldiers were being sent into this area to kill kangaroos and emus.
Today Brighton¹s major claim to importance is based on its relationship with the Brighton Military Camp which was established in 1914 and is now the major military training facility in Tasmania.

Having said all that, Tasmania is doing better today than it was say in the early 90s and the whole of Australia is doing better than it was in the early 90s.
And Tasmania like the rest of Australia has enjoyed low interest rates, low inflation, it has enjoyed strong consumer confidence and many of these things of course are due to important economic settings that have been put in place at the national level over the last 10 years.
And so Tasmania has enjoyed the proceeds of those and I welcome the fact that Tasmania is doing much better today than it was 10 years ago.

The last known Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, died in captivity in 1936, but a team of Australian biologists believes the animal's extinction may simply be a 70-year hiccup.
The tigers were only seen by white settlers on Tasmania, the island state that appears like a teardrop beneath Australia's southeast coast, but the predators once roamed the mainland and the island of New Guinea, where they were killed off by wild dogs introduced by man some 6,000 years ago.
On Tasmania, the tiger quickly became the bitter enemy of British settlers.
