Brighton College, has taken the unprecedented step of announcing that Mandarin Chinese will be a core part of the curriculum for all pupils in the College from aged 3 upwards.

The origins of the current Faculty of Arts & Architecture at the University of Brighton lie in the establishment of the Brighton School of Art in the kitchen of the opulent Royal Pavilion in January 1859.
Highly significant also were Sallis Benney's efforts to confirm Brighton's status as a first ranking educational institution on a par with the University sector through proposals for the proposed International College of Art to undertake artistic research work and consultancy for manufacturing industry.
Nonetheless, the 1970s saw considerable developments in art and design education at Brighton, with the establishment of a portfolio of specialist and often pioneering courses in art and design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

At a presentation to the Brighton and Hove City Forum at Brighton College last night, Evan Davies – BBC Economics Editor – urged local authorities to be flexible about the use class of new building developments but strict about the quality of their design.
When asked whether it mattered that manufacturing accounted for so little of Brighton and Hove’s economy (less than 4%) he expressed the view that countries could not survive without some manufacturing base but town’s and cities could quite happily survive providing services.
He was particularly enthusiastic about the need for a young population with ideas and drive and made reference to Prof Richard Florida’s “boho society” thesis which also rates the GBLT community as a boon to creativity.
