  Brighton West Pier
Brighton's West Pier was designed and engineered by Eugenius Birch to attract visitors and survive in the hostile environment of the seashore.
The pier is shown above as originally built with two toll houses at the landward end, twin kiosks for shelter in the centre and ladie's and gentlemen's retiring rooms at the pier head.

A witness on Brighton seafront said the flames could be seen rising above the fair rides at the far end of the pier.
The pier - which used to be called Palace Pier - was hit by an explosion and fire in August 1995, when a blast ripped through an electricity sub-station below decking at the sea end.

I always imagine that The West Pier was the locals pier and that the Palace Pier appealed primarily to tourists.
Although the West Pier Company, when advertising for shareholders, claimed that investments would increase by 15%, in practice in the best years it was about 12% and by the 1880's it was starting to drift down to 6% per year which was still a profit but not a good one.
Brighton Council refused because the hotel was an important historical building but 3 weeks later unfortunately The Bedford Hotel burnt down and it had to be rebuilt anyway.

 The New Brighton Promenade Pier
The New Brighton Promenade Pier was built in 1867 adjacent to the ferry pier on the north side.
The pier closed in 1923 and four years later the Wallasey Corporation became its new owners and re-opened it with its own entrance from the promenade.
As in other resorts the pier had its own theatre, it was not built to high standards but some good turns could be seen on its stage.

On offer here is not just a collection of rides on the end of the pier but also a collection of other amusements on the pier.
So, would I rank Brighton as one of the better smaller parks that function as a diversion on a visit to a town, or one that is an attraction in it's own right.
Another thing you have to consider is although it says the pier is open 364 days a year the funfair is pretty much dead at non peak times, with the combination of rides left unmanned, and minimum numbers of riders on some rides meaning there isn't that much on offer in terms of rides.

The pier really needs to get a move on with the new Boosters and Megadrop as to be honest most of the rides there are average at best now.
However, at the same time the West Pier is beyond restoration and should be demolished, or just be left to rot in to the sea, which looks likely within the next year or so.

the west pier (which recently fell partly into the sea) has been abandoned for many years, and brighton pier which caught fire last night is the newer pier.
The Rest of the Rides are OK though, and the damage overall is not as bad at first thought, so with a bit of luck, That part of the Pier could be restored quite easily.
