Brighton Rock is one of very few films successfully adapted from Graham Greene's work.
The story is set between the wars, when, as we are told, Brighton was full of "dark alleyways and festering slums", and crime, violence and gang warfare were rampant.
On its release, Brighton Rock was seen as genuinely shocking; especially unsettling was the notion that a teenager like Pinkie could be so chillingly evil.

Graham Greene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brighton Rock, The Heart of the Matter and The Power and the Glory) are explicitly Roman Catholic in content and preoccupations.
His fiction was originally divided into two genres: thrillers or mystery/suspense books, such as Brighton Rock, that he himself cast as "entertainments" but which often included a notable philosophical edge, and literary works such as The Power and the Glory, on which his reputation was thought to be based.
As his career lengthened, however, Greene and his readers both found the "entertainments" to be of nearly as high a value as the literary efforts, and Greene's later efforts such as The Human Factor, The Comedians, Our Man in Havana and The Quiet American, combine these modes into works of remarkable insight and compression.

 Studying Brighton Rock
In the novel, Brighton is important as a well-drawn setting for the action; as a metaphorical device for depicting the eternal realities of heaven and hell; for its close identification with Pinkie, and for its atmosphere.
Brighton is (or was, in Britain, until recent times) very closely associated in the public mind with the sticks of rock sold there, and would have been so even more in the 1930s, when the rock would have been seen as a semi-luxury.
Brighton, here, like Wuthering Heights, in Brontë's novel of the same name is, arguably, as much a state of mind as a real place with streets and houses, even though Greene makes several precise references to the topography (layout) of the real town.

Beginning with a thrilling chase sequence in which newspaperman Kolley Kibber is hounded by a gang of razor-blade carrying spivs through 30s Brighton, John Boulting's adaptation of Graham Greene's classic novel stakes its claim as one of the darkest films ever to be made on these shores.
Forced into a corner by the trail of evidence he's left behind and by the machinations of rival mobster Colleoni (Charles Goldner), Pinky has to marry naïve waitress Rose (Marsh) in order to keep her from testifying against him.

Being Brighton’s most well known musical export this is understandable, but it also goes to show that when it comes to bands, Brighton has never really had a great deal of musical success outside of the local scene.
In 2000 Brighton was officially awarded City status, which seemed to make people more aware of the place and what was going on in the new City by the sea.
After numerous gigs in some of Brighton’s smaller venues (such as the famous Freebutt and a monthly residency at the Pressure Point) they signed a record deal and released a couple of singles that won them radio play by the likes of Steve Lamacq on Radio 1.

Brighton Rock - Synopsis - Moviefone
A moody, well-acted film with a stunning performance by the 24-year-old Attenborough, Brighton Rock is notable for bringing a new vicious realism to British crime cinema.
The grim realism and sordid subject matter of the film is striking, handled by twin filmmakers Roy and John Boulting, who use mood and dark, stark photography to convey an almost palpable sense of dread.
The American distributor of Brighton Rock, smelling disaster with that ambivalent title, renamed the film Young Scarface, and while it was quite controversial in its day, the film can't quite recapture the impact it had upon its initial release.
