In 1869 Brighton became an incorporated town.3 Although many businesses flourished within the confines of the town, a large majority of persons in the township engaged in farming as their main source of income.
Brighton Township primarily employed teachers from within its own local districts as well as from outside the area.4 Many of the one-room schoolteachers were formerly local students with obvious strong roots in the community, which gave them a local identity.
