Cabinet Magazine Online - Brigido Lara, post-pre-Colombian ceramicist
Lara continues to sculpt what look like ancient objects, pieces which he prefers to call "original interpretations." He has since been licensed as a maker of replicas by the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia, the very institution that once con-demned him as a looter, and he now signs all of his ceramics.
Lara, who has never been to New York, knows a great deal about the piece and its construction, enough to suggest that at the very least he was witness to its manufacture.
Lara's success points to certain weaknesses within the archeological establishment, which has paid a great deal of attention to iconography and the identification of divinities and royalty.

In 1974 Lara was arrested along with several of his cousins for possessing and trafficking in archaeological treasures, a crime punishable by 10 years in prison.
Lara insisted the pieces were copies he had made, but experts brought in by the judge insisted they were originals, probably raided from tombs.
Lara started sculpting copies of ancient ceramics when he was 9 years old, one of 14 children of a poor farmer who moved from southern Oaxaca to Veracruz state, home of the Totonaca Indians.

James Wierzbicki / forgery in art
There is still no real proof that Lara himself fabricated the pieces, according to Harry Parker, director of the Dallas Museum of Art which, along with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, also seems to be in possession of some Lara originals.
But several of the pieces in St. Louis and Dallas that Lara identified as his own have already been proven to be fakes, and the others are definitely under suspicion.
The jury is still out on this one, but the object is among the pieces Brigido Lara says he created in the 1950s and '60s.
