The choice may have been unfortunate, as Kipruto had to settle for a bronze after pushing a brutal pace (sub-1:53 at 800m).
In Athens he was part of a Kenyan sweep of the top four (!) places, as Kipruto and his teammates, Ezekiel Kemboi and Koech, began pushing the pace at the start of the second lap and dropped all but former compatriot Moses Kipchirchir (now Moussa Omar Obaid of Qatar).
Kipruto’s given name is actually Firmin, but it was mistakenly transcribed by a clerk in 2001 when he was applying for a birth certificate so as to secure his first passport.

The main photo above shows Brimin Kipruto clearing the water jump for the penultimate time on his way to winning the silver medal in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Just behind Brimin are his compatriots Ezekiel Kemboi (2338), who won the Gold, and Paul Kipsiele Koech (2345) who completed a Kenyan clean sweep of the medals.

Kipruto who came naturally to the sport enjoy telling the story of how he used to go to primary school and was advised to compete in the school championships.
Kipruto came back in the spotlight as early as June 2004 as he took the 3000m Steeplechase win in the Hengelo meeting but despite setting a World leading time and new personal best of 8:05.52 (also meeting record) his outstanding performance was overshadowed by Kenenisa Bekele’s breathtaking World record at 10,000m that same evening.
Kipruto was the revelation of the Steeplechase final in Nairobi and at only 19 years of age he finished a fantastic second (8:17.1) behind World silver medallist Ezekiel Kemboi (8:16.5), and so was automatically selected for the Olympics.

 Kipruto leads juniors’ side to world meeting
Brimin Kipruto leads the national team that left yesterday for the World Junior Championships starting tomorrow in Grossetto, Italy.
Kipruto, the third fastest steeplechaser in the world this year, will feature in the 1,500m during the junior event and in the 3000m SC during the Olympic Games.
Kipruto said he performs better under pressure hence his opting to take part in both events.

Kipruto clocked 3:36.53 to improve his previous best time of 3:35.96 for a bronze medal at the 10th IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosseto, in 2004.
Kipruto's winning time was the seventh fastest this season behind Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain, whose world leading time is a swift 3:32.34.
