Brindabella, in the southern tablelands of south eastern NSW, is situated roughly in the middle of a triangle formed by Canberra, Cooma and Tumut.
Brindabella is not for visitors who wish to spend all their time in Hotels and Casinos.
Whilst it seldom snows in the valley, the tops of the ranges around generally are snow covered for a couple of months during winter.

Weather and bushfire monitoring in the ACT will be improved by a new automatic weather station at Mount Ginini in the Brindabella Ranges.
The need for improved weather and bushfire monitoring in the Brindabella Ranges was identified by the McLeod Report into the bushfires of January last year.
The new fully automated station is the result of a successful negotiations between the Australian weather bureau and the ACT Government, with both entities contributing to the cost.

 Mt Ginini to keep watch on ACT weather Media Release 13 July 2004
The installation of an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at Mt Ginini in the Brindabella ranges will mean improved fire monitoring and forecasting for the ACT.
Dr Sharman Stone, Parliamentary Secretary with responsibility for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the new AWS was a joint collaboration between the Bureau and the ACT Emergency Services Bureau (ESB).
"Senator Humphries has worked hard to progress the installation of this new AWS in the Brindabella ranges in time for next summer and understands the importance of this to the ACT," Dr Stone said.

McIntyre’s Hut is a mountain hut in the Brindabella ranges South of Canberra.
He loves to fish, always has and his photos tell of a time where Australia’s river stock were far more plentiful and a younger man had a dream of putting up a little hut on a beautiful river in the Brindbellas.

The clearing of vegetation and the disturbance/removal of topsoil from TransGrid’s easements in the Snowy and Brindabella Ranges in March 2001 presented a significant rehabilitation challenge for TransGrid, the NSW national Parks and Wildlife Service and NSW Soil Services.
The results of the work carried out needed to be in sympathy with both national parks management objectives and the maintenance needs of the transmission line easements.
From the extensive clearing and subsequent rehabilitation program, and with the input experts from a range of disciplines, many lessons in ecological restoration have been learnt and guidelines for future programs for both industry and conservation agencies developed.

Property owners west of Canberra fear heavy fuel loads on the ground could be worse than three years ago, when devastating bushfires began in the Brindabella ranges.
Brindabella Valley property owner Noeline Franklin says the combination of dead trees from the 2003 firestorm and fresh regrowth could be a problem if another blaze starts.
Ms Franklin says it is foolish to think the Canberra fire was an 'once in 100 years' event.

Amateur cameraman Steve Piper captured the mystery animal while filming for a video clip in the Brindabella ranges, south of Canberra.
He says he was filming what he thought was a large kangaroo in a gully, when he realised it was far too big to be a kangaroo.
Further investigations will now be carried out in the Brindabellas, where two sightings have been reported in the past century.

ACT ESA advises that the Brindabella Road and surrounding roads around the Brindabella Ranges are extremely dangerous, due to mud.
Due to the weather conditions this weekend a build up of mud has caused Brindabella Road to be extremely slippery and difficult to drive.

A man has been rescued from under a tractor, after being trapped for over nine hours in dark and rainy conditions near Blue Range Hut in the Brindabella Mountain Range overnight.
The man was discovered at 23:15 on Blue Range Road, after being trapped under the cab of an articulated forestry vehicle for approximately six hours.
The identity of the person who made the 000 call is unknown.

 Wildlife Sighting
The Brindabella Ranges near Canberra are the most northern extremes of the frogs area and it is hear that we sometimes spot these strange creatures.
As they are very well camouflaged with their grey bodies and red heads (males) we normally spot them only after they've given a squawk - which by the way sounds like a creaky door or cork being pulled from a bottle.
It is fairly rare but known to inhabit the wet gullies around the Brindabella Ranges.

The Southern species is found in the Snowy Mountains (New South Wales), whereas the Northern species occurs in the Bimberi and Brindabella Ranges in the ACT and adjacent Bogong Mountains and Fiery Ranges in New South Wales (ACT Government 1997).
Although the populations in the Fiery Ranges and Bogong Mts in NSW have declined, they are still relatively secure.
The January 2003 wildfires burnt most of the Corroboree Frog habitat in the ACT (Brindabella/Bimberi Ranges), although frogs are now using the regenerating areas.

The eight-week project yielded 38 provenances of 16 species (14 eucalypts and 2 casuarinas) and a total seed weight of 51.3 kg from 354 parent trees.
A two-day collection in the Brindabella Ranges gave four provenances of Eucalyptus pauciflora yielding 3 kg of seed from 20 parent trees.
By late December a wide range of genera had been sampled including species of Acacia, Adenanthera, Atalaya, Grevillea, Leptospermum, Melaleuca, Parinaria, Petalostigma, Planchonella, Sterculia, Syzygium, and Terminalia.

 The Rides: Twin Peaks Ride (Cooleman Ridge to Mt Taylor)
It may be best to push your bike up this hill, which only lasts a couple of hundred metres or so before it abruptly levels out with a fine view across the suburbs towards Black Mountain and the prominent Telstra Tower, north west towards Duffy Pines and Stromlo forest, and west towards the Brindabella Mountains.
Back on the bike, a smooth and level track winds along the eastern side of the ridge well above the houses of Chapman.
Returning to the track continue to follow the smooth undulating route as it hugs the backs of the suburbs for a further 3 km.

When traversing the Brindabella Ranges in the ACT aboard a CRF450X last year the bike let me get away with things that I hadn’t thought were possible within the realms of my limited dirt riding abilities.
I gave it the nod, as the extra power of the bike is welcome when out for a casual trail ride away from the tighter confines of the track.
This is all good quality gear that is around the middle of the price ranges compared to a lot of the other gear on the market except perhaps the boots which are a little more in the upper range price bracket.

All 12 vehicles met at service station at Pheasants Nest at 8.30am Saturday, then made our way to Yass where Bruce (trip leader) and Adam caught up to us.
After morning tea we drove off through Wee Jasper making our way to the Brindabellas.
While driving along dirt road Liam's car started to overheat, so we all stopped for lunch so he could check his car and let it cool down.
