Xiibaro Reviews: The Art of War and Bring It On
Sometimes bad films are held up from complete waste by having able direction, but this is not one of those cases -- Duguay yearns to create a scene in the sweeping form of some of his action contemporaries, but cannot hold a candle to them.
The film's protagonist, newly deemed head cheerleader Torrance Shipman (Dunst), is not someone that you might think could lead a team to victory, and she is not really supposed to be that easy.
The film's secondary cheerleading squad, a much looked over fl squad from East Compton, is treated with about as much respect as the oppressors that carry on the film's feeble message of unity and graciousness.

And if the film is especially clever, it may teach you about something that you had no urge to know about in the first place.
As with films such like "Clueless" and "Can’t Hardly Wait", there is a focus on the human side of teenagers, and they are here portrayed as individuals who are interested in more than just partying and sex.
The film nicely blends humor and drama, and is one of the few films that I’ve seen recently that is consistently entertaining throughout.

While Universal Pictures' latest comedy, "Bring It On," briefly touches on such matters, asking for a meaningful or in-depth exploration of that issue is clearly a bit much for this film that's about as substantial as a pompom.
An occasionally amusing and clearly energetic but plot challenged film about high school cheerleading, this picture is all about sass and teen sensuality and not much else, with the male cheerleader angle only being a small comedic cog in the overall picture.

Nearing the finale of Bring It On, I began to fear that the message of Bring It On was about how affluent white teenagers, if they have enough determination, can stomp the crap out of underfunded, inner city teenagers if they put their mind to it.
Bring It On is really about how a white teenage girl, if she has enough determination, can forgo everything else in her life and just focus on cheerleading, cheerleading, cheerleading.

Torrance's new reign as cheer queen, though, is cut short when she discovers that her snotty, duplicitous forerunner was regularly stealing routines from the East Compton Clovers, the hip-hop influenced cheerleaders of a poor inner city school, and passing them off as the original work of the Toros.

Colorfully shot, attractively cast, and snappily written, Bring It On is hardly a great movie, but it's perfectly appealing for most people and I'd guess that the millions of cheerleaders and former cheerleaders nationwide will get a lot more out of it.
It's also amusing to note the strange directions that this movie is able to stretch the limits of the PG-13 rating in terms of language and certain forms of implied sexuality.

The film presents the sport of athletic cheerleading in quite a serious manner, while at the same time having fun with the story.

At one point in the film, Missy says, "State Regionals, here we come," but any high school athlete, particularly a cheerleader, would know that a Regional Competition takes place within a state, and those placing highest at Regionals would then move on to the State Competition.
When the team hires Sparky to teach them a routine, he brings a boom box, which he uses to play the music.
Near the beginning of the film where Torrance is at cheerleader tryouts she says "finals are on February 10th, regionals are in like 4 weeks" yet in the rest of the film it looks like its the middle of summer.

BRING IT ON AGAIN - DVD
Against all odds, the straight-to-video production shows traces of wit and a surfeit of good basic ideas in its tale of rival cheerleading squads, but alas, it was not to be: its core concept withers on the vine in favour of slapped-together aesthetics and teen-sitcom repartee.
Bring It On Again recounts the saga of Whittier (Anne Judson-Yager), a blonde and perky freshman at Cal State University; this being a sequel to Bring It On, she and good friend Monica (Faune A. Chambers) aspire to become cheerleaders.
Everything about the film feels thrown together at the last minute--the notion of timing completely eludes the director, and while his cast is game (especially the delightfully snippy Bree Turner), there's no visual evidence of even trying to do something with the shreds of concept handed to him by the writers.
