Topic: Bring on the Snakes

  Merge Records
from milkmag.com: Bring on the Snakes is a continuation of a sound that is once again not the product of years spent on the indie-rock carousel, but of years spent absorbing great and gritty songsmiths, from Hank the first and the Man in Black to Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Bruce Springsteen.
Like those greats, Bachmann is a singer-songwriter, but not a gentle troubadour strumming his lute for the ladies; his 200-cigarette throat and off-center lyrics will (hopefully) prevent anyone from using the word "folk" to describe Crooked Fingers.
That's not to say that Bring on the Snakes is without its truly gentle moments, as Bachmann expertly utilizes his nylon-stringed acoustic - it's just that the gentleness is constantly at odds with near-resignation.

Ringneck Snakes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Ringneck snakes belong to the genus Diadophis, which is a name derived from the Greek word diadem, meaning "headband," and ophis, meaning "snake," Combined, the two words refer to the light collar or neck ring present in most ringneck snakes.
Ringneck snakes are somewhat social in nature; however keep in mind that they are also occasionally cannibalistic so think carefully if you choose to house them in groups or with other small species of snakes.
The snake's saliva is believed to have some mild venomous-like properties that may cause an allergic reaction in some sensitive individuals, however, the chances of these small snakes being able to bring those rear teeth into action in terms of biting humans is very slim.

However, I think a greater awareness is needed of many people who still think snakes are evil and "the only good snake is a dead snake." First of all, I do not conform to the "bunny hugger" attitude of not killing any snakes, but the 'shoot first ask questions later' is a completely uninformed decision.
Next (to stick up for the venemous kind), venemous snake bites are extremely rare with over 3/4 of those people that were bit were trying to kill the snake.
I could go on an on, but the fact is that once you kill one snake in your yard or in the woods, there is another younger one behind it, looking to gain territory.

The title track, "Bring On the Snakes," deals with the metaphor of snakes shedding their skin.
While the lyrics of Bring On the Snakes definitely come from a tired soul, it is of one ready to be reborn.
If anything, Bring On the Snakes should be the pop album, and the self-titled debut should be the quiet mournful folk album; instead we have the opposite.

Snakes are often referred to as evil, dangerous and slimy creatures.
Most of these snakes are not dangerous to humans because: their venom is mild or injected in too small a quantity; their mouths are too small to bite a human; mouth parts too weak to break human skin;or teeth placed too far back in the mouth.
Because snakes are not as cute as furry animals and don't scream out in pain, there has been little support for conservation of endangered snakes and more humane treatment of snakes used commercially, e.g., for their skin.

Because "Snakes" ("SoaP," to its fans) isn't just a B-movie boasting Samuel L. Jackson and the worst title in decades; it's the B-movie that's changed film marketing forever.
They worry that the film's release will be the anticlimactic end to an era, that it's inspired so much creative lunacy that we've lost sight of the fact that it is, after all, just a cheesy disaster movie with a great title.
Yes, the "Snakes" meme might well turn out to be the best part of "Snakes on a Plane." Barring a miracle -- for instance, "SoaP" achieving the unintentional camp of "Showgirls" or the ironic brilliance of "The Evil Dead" -- the best times might have already passed.
