  CMT.com : Brinsley Schwarz : Biography
Brinsley Schwarz was a rambling, neo-psychedelic folk-rock band that borrowed heavily from Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Grateful Dead.
When Brinsley Schwarz finally hit the stage, the band gave a competent but underwhelming performance, setting the stage for a flood of scathing reviews for both the concert and the eponymously titled debut album, which appeared weeks after the showcase.
By the end of 1970, the Brinsleys released a second album, Despite It All, which indicated that they were evolving into a country-rock outfit; guitarist/vocalist Ian Gomm joined the band at the end of the sessions for the record.

Schwarz is a legendary British musician and founder of the band "Brinsley Schwarz" which was part of the so-called "pub rock" movement in England during the 1970s.
Schwarz would go on to work with Graham Parker (the prototype for Elvis Costello) and lend his signature sound and "parts-based" style to many of Parkers recordings.
After his conversion to Hamer, Schwarz ordered a number of Standards in various finishes, and became one of the first to play the Hamer "Prototype" model when it was released in the early 1980s.

Brinsley Schwarz had an early morning spot so probably did not attract the same level of attention, however their fresh and original style made them many friends on the day.

Though famous for launching Nick Lowe as an artist, the band was named after its guitarist, Brinsley Schwarz, a hugely underrated guitar player who went on to form the Rumour with Martin Belmont.
Brinsley currently divides his time between being head guitar tech at Chandler Guitars and developing his own range of boutique tube amps.
Dave Robinson, the Brinsleys manager and eventually a Stiff Records co-founder, had installed an all valve recording studio upstairs at the Hope and Anchor pub in Islington and was learning to use it by inviting groups of players to record something.

Schwarz himself and keyboardist Bob Andrews would join Graham Parker's Rumour, and Brinsley-come-lately Ian Gomm made several good records for the Stiff label.
However, the first couple of Brinsley Schwarz records were very country sounding, sometimes even venturing into CSN or Grateful Dead territory - nothing like what power pop would ultimately become.
Brinsley Schwarz and Despite It All sound quaint in retrospect, but they catch fire occasionally ("Country Girl") and show signs of the wry humor that would mark Lowe's future work ("Rock and Roll Women").

Trouble is, most pub-rock bands were produced with a similar lack of ambition, so their recordings from the time sound thin and inconsequential.
That said, bassist and de facto frontman Nick Lowe wrote a bunch of beauties with the Brinsleys— the Lennon-ish "I Won't Make It Without You", for one—and there are charming covers here of Jim Ford's "Ju Ju Man", The Crickets' "Don't Ever Change" and even Leroy Sibbles' ska classic, "Hypocrite".

This group was an important part of the 'pub-rock' phenomenon in Britain in the seventies - Andrews, Lowe and Schwarz had all previously been with Kippington Lodge, a harmony band that Mark Wirtz had signed up to EMI's Parlophone label in the mid-sixties.
As is well known now the band were subjected to one of the biggest hypes in rock history - a planeload of music journalists were flown across the Atlantic to see their debut at New York's Fillmore East, but were unimpressed with the then unknown band.

Brinsley Schwarz started out as Britain's answer to Poco, moved on to become the premier band of the pub rock movement, and wound up something akin to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Hooks.
They started out overhyped and wound up underrated; their last three albums were never even released in the US of A, and they quietly disbanded a couple years ago.
Nominal leader Brinsley Schwarz and keyboard virtuoso Bob Andrews soon showed up in an outfit called the Rumour, a band that could do everything and had the vocalist/author they merited in Graham Parker.

The members of the major pub rock bands -- Brinsley Schwarz, Ducks Deluxe, Bees Make Honey, Ace, Dr. Feelgood -- came from a variety of musical backgrounds, including folk-rock, blues, country-rock, and traditional rock & roll.
None of the pub-rock bands became stars or had hits, but their do-it-yourself attitude and stripped-down sound -- as well as the creation of the pub-rock circuit itself -- paved the way for punk rock.
Indeed, many pub rockers -- including Brinsley Schwarz's Nick Lowe, the 101ers' Joe Strummer, Flip City's Elvis Costello, Kilburn & the High Roads' Ian Dury and Graham Parker -- became important figures in punk and new wave just a few years after the pub-rock scene faded in the mid-'70s.
