The Brisbane Bears Football Club, with the maroon of Queensland and the gold of the Queensland sunshine as their colours, was officially unveiled to the public on 7 October 1986, with Paul Cronin installed as inaugural chairman.
Round 16 saw the Bears at home to Hawthorn, which was enduring its worst season for 30 years, but up to three quarter time the visitors played like their recent, premiership-winning predecessors in racking up 13.10 (88) to 5.13 (43), a lead of 45 points.
Brisbane's finals debut could scarcely have presented a stiffer challenge: away to minor premiers Carlton which had lost just 2 games for the year, and was being widely touted as one of the most outstanding combinations of all time.

Brisbane Bears - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No venue in Brisbane was suitable (the Gabba was encircled by a greyhound track at the time) and so the Bears based themselves at Carrara Oval, an hour's drive south-east of Brisbane on the Gold Coast.
To Skase, the Bears were another outpost in his media and leisure empire which also included the Mirage resorts (one of which was very close to Carrara) and the TV0 television station (later sold to acquire the Seven Network), official broadcasters of the VFL.
The Brisbane Bears, along with the West Coast Eagles were one of the first clubs to have a non-traditional song.

The Brisbane Bears Football Club was formed on 6 October, 1986, when, after a protracted battle, a licence for a Queensland-based club in the then Victorian Football League was awarded to a joint syndicate headed by businessman/actor Paul Cronin, the inaugural chairman, and the QAFL.
Their “home” remained split between Brisbane and the Gold Coast after the club fended off court action by the QAFL seeking an order to relocate the club to Brisbane, as was detailed in the original licence agreement.
In November 1991 the Bears signed a Heads of Agreement with Reuben Pelerman for the ownership to be transferred to a traditional membership-based structure, and in December the club’s first independent Board of Directors was established.

 Brisbane (3)
Brisbane in 2001 was close to the finished article, winning its final 13 home and away matches for the year to qualify for the finals in 2nd place, behind leaders Essendon only on percentage.
The finals scores were Brisbane 15.18 (108) to Essendon 12.10 (72), a margin of only 26 points, but in truth the game had been won well before the end by a team playing with a style and conviction that must have sent tremors down the spines of all 15 of the other AFL clubs' coaches.
Many observers expected Brisbane's allegedly superior fitness to tell in the 2nd half, but this was far from the case as Collingwood kept up the pressure throughout, actually outscoring the Lions (4.6 to 4.2) during a 3rd term in which they often appeared to be the stronger side.

Not long afterwards, the club was officially announced as the Brisbane Bears, signing recently-retired Hawthorn (A spring-flowering shrub or small tree of the genus Crataegus) player Peter Knights as coach, and unveiling an innovative playing strip consisting of a gold with a maroon yoke and a triangular "BB" logo.
By three-quarter time in round 16 the Bears were 45 points behind Hawthorn (A spring-flowering shrub or small tree of the genus Crataegus), third-last on the ladder and another mediocre placing seemed inevitable.
One of the Bears' biggest problems was its lack of support (both on and off the field) in Melbourne (The capital of Victoria state and 2nd largest Australian city; a financial and commercial center), the location of most of its away matches.

The Brisbane "team" of Gordon, Ireland and fellow director Graeme Downie, an expert in insolvency, was armed with a legal document proposing a merger with Fitzroy, and were confident it was substantially more appealing to the Fitzroy creditors than the North offer.
Brisbane was clearly in a better position, their proposal already finalised in the form of a legal document.
The only concession Brisbane made to their original offer was to exclude the Administrator's fees from the pool of money that would repay Fitzroy creditors, thereby guaranteeing creditors the full agreed sum of $950,000.

 First Up Win For Bears
The Brisbane centreman's towering kick reaches the front of the goal square where a pack has formed, but no one is able to hold onto the ball, which tumbles goalwards to the rear of the pack where Jim Edmond is standing unattended.
Brisbane's response is an identikit of North's previous goal, as a chain of handballs involving McCarthy, Richardson and Phillips ends up freeing O'Keefe in plenty of space and with time to steady before firing home from less than 30 metres.
The Bears' refusal to adhere to the script was a tribute to their resilience and determination, qualities on which they would need to rely repeatedly over the coming seasons as they endeavoured to construct a viable club tradition from scratch.

In late 1996 the club operations of the Fitzroy Lions and the Brisbane Bears merged to form a NEW club called the Brisbane Lions, a fact that The Age newspapers have consistently refused to acknowledge throughout the 1999 football season.
The AFL's and the Brisbane Lions' official line is that the Brisbane Lions is a new club formed by the merger of the club operations of Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears.
Given that the Brisbane Lions' position has been that the playing records of players who represented the Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions should be continuous, we also felt it was logical that the match records of the club including head to head against other clubs should also be continuous.

He said if it happened today the Bears would have breached their duty of care to Strempel and would be legally liable, at the very least for breach of contract.
