Erection of 20-storey office towers in the late 1960s and 1970s gave Brisbane more of a capital city feel, but the flood suggested that its country town origins were never far from the surface.
Exciting architectural developments were happening at the coast but Brisbane, not quite convinced of its metropolitan status, lingered in a 'big country town' identity.
Brisbane's country town intimacy was nowhere better reflected than on the corner of George and Alice Streets, where Parliament House, the Bellevue Hotel (home to 27 out-of-town parliamentarians), the Botanic Gardens and the Queensland Club created a street corner larger in scale but similar in feel to Rockhampton or Maryborough.

It's delightful, I think, that the ANARE Club of Queensland have got the exhibition around, and let it be able to be seen by many Queenslanders, particularly young people, who perhaps wouldn't have had the opportunity of this almost first hand experience with the Antarctic.
And this exhibition recognises the considerable distinction that Australia's Antarctic expeditioners have brought to this country since the commencement of these expeditions back in 1947.
So he's a really remarkable man. I just wanted to say that about Syd just to indicate the great quality in all of our expeditioners, and Syd is a very good example of all of them, and of the work he's done.

 Heiser Gallery - William Yaxley
Eventually returning to Australia, the artist and his wife, Helen, settled in the central Queensland coastal community of Byfield, north of Yeppoon, where they farmed citrus fruits and Yaxley was able to continue to paint, exhibiting with Ray Hughes Gallery in Brisbane and later in Sydney when that gallery relocated south.
In 1993 it was curated in the exhibition Dame Edna Regrets at the Museum of Modern Art, Heidi, Melbourne, and in 2003 it was included in the exhibition Beneath the Monsoon: Visions North of Capricorn shown at Artspace Mackay.
This is the artist’s first exhibition in Brisbane since 1989, and I look forward very much to reintroducing Brisbane audiences and clients to Yaxley’s work.
