National Parks took control of the building in 1977 as the first stage of a general preservation effort.
The National Parks Service took control of the courthouse in 1977 and has since bought up all of the land on which Steiglitz stood, preserving the relics that remain.
Rather than using the site to recreate a contemporary gold town, as at Sovereign Hill (see entry on Ballarat), Steiglitz Historic Park was conceived as a complimentary example of what happens when the gold runs out and there is nothing else to keep the population.

Parks Victoria asked for it to be relocated as it encouraged people to leave the track through the gorge, and could have contributed to the spread of the Cinnamon Fungus which can cause serious die back among the native plants and trees.
It is not near a parking area, you will need to park at the side of the road.

The entrance and camping area to Brisbane Ranges was far away to the north east so we decided to give it a miss.
The National Park camping grounds around the Fleurieu Peninsula are set way back from the ocean, some up to 2 kms away.
The funny thing was that everytime the locals (in the park) heard the train coming they rushed out of their vans and jumped onto a row of old pine tree stumps and waved at the train hoping for a toot in return which they usually got.
