		Brisbane (pronounced /ˈbɹɪz.bən/) is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Queensland, and is the third largest city in Australia, with a population of over 1.77 million.
		Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony in June 1859 and Brisbane, which was named in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane (the, then, Governor of New South Wales), was chosen as its capital.

		The river was named after the Governor of New South Wales Sir Thomas Brisbane by the explorer John Oxley in 1823.
		Early rivers crossings were made by rowing ferries followed by steam ferries.
		The efficacy of dredging the river upstream of the city reach to make it "navigable" was always in doubt, and the effect of the artificial sediment load in Moreton Bay grew to concern environmentalists worried that sediment was choking sea grass paddocks which were grazing territory for dugong.

		The Aboriginal people who lived on the south side of the river called the area where the Botanical Gardens were established, Meeanjin, meaning the tulipwood, a tree which grew well in the area before white settlement, but in the 19th century Brisbane came to be known to all the Moreton Bay Aboriginal people as Maginuchin.
		The main settlement in convict Brisbane was on the north side of the river along by the present William Street, but a settlement started to develop on the south side fairly early.
