Bristle worms can be, and usually, are a real problem for reef hobbyists.
Whereas small bristle worms may look really harmless, larger specimens that have grown to sizes of 24 inches or more in length are quite impressive and can cause serious damage.
It may trap some real small worms but it will, in the majority of cases, not trap the real large ones, the ones you really need to get rid of as they are the ones that cause most of the damage.

The fishes may learn not to attack the worms (although this will vary from fish to fish; my mature Premnas female either is a masochist or has intelligence measured in negative numbers as she continues to persist in attacking the worms) and such learning is likely good for years.
The eunicid worms found in aquaria all have five antennae, with a large pronounced antennae arising from the center of the "forehead." Large eunicid worms from two distinct groups are found in aquaria.

Polychaete Annelid Identification, or “You Can Always Tell A Bristle WormÂ… by Ronald L. Shimek, Ph.D. - ...
Segmented worms by their very definition are comprised of similar appearing body units or segments, and while it is always useful to be sure of the basic segment shape and structure, it is often most useful to examine those segments that differ from the "average" segment.
Although annelid worms are made with the classic "tube within a tube" construction of long wormy animals anywhere, the front end of the inner tube, or gut, does not occur at the absolute front end of the animal, but rather a short distance back.
The front end of the worm is typically a small bulbous projection called the "prostomium" which is joined with a normal segmental boundary to the subsequent body region, called the peristomium.

Although the "fancier" models may work and may remove some of the undesirable animals, including bristle worms, I find that hobbyists seem to get the best results with home made models that cost very little and appear to be more effective than the more expensive ones.
Why they are more effective has to do with their design and with the fact that they often can be adjusted by the hobbyists according to what he or she wants to trap (as we shall see in the next section).
If you have observed your aquarium at night, which you should have done, and know the approximate location (hiding space) of the worm(s), that is where you should place the trap, or at least as close to that area as you can.

The myth that bristle worms are dangerous in reef tanks is a classic case of a little bit of knowledge being a dangerous thing.
As these worms don't attack and kill animals, neither do their bristles sting corals or sea anemones, and they definitely don't crawl up into the cavities inside a tridacnid clam, and start eating it.
