Of all the campaigns undertaken by the Army of the Potomac, this is certainly the most obscure.
Battle of Bristoe Station (October 14, 1863) — A.P. Hill's corps stumbled upon two corps of the retreating Union army at Bristoe Station and attacked without proper reconnaissance.
Battle of Buckland Mills (October 19, 1863) — After defeat at Bristoe Station and an aborted advance on Centreville, Stuart's cavalry shielded the withdrawal of Lee's army from the vicinity of Manassas Junction.

When within 3 miles of Bristoe the regiment, with the brigade, halted for the purpose of covering the rear of the corps.
After the corps passed they took up their line of march for Bristoe, arrived there about one hour before sunset, and took position along the railroad, the left of the regiment resting on the right of Colonel Brooke's brigade, of the First Division.
The enemy, while concealed in the thickets, fired upon the column as it was marching to Bristoe and while the regiment was taking position, but none was injured thereby, nor did the regiment have any opportunity of engaging the enemy.

 Bristoe Campaign
Robert E. Lee seized on this oppurtunity to turn Meade's flank and advance on Washington, D.C. The lull in fighting in the east after the Gettysburg Campaign stretched for nearly 3 months as the Confederate Army Of Northern Virginia and the Army Of The Potomac, both ravaged by the campaign, recuperated.
Lee had failed to intercept the Union retreat; and the campaign had no significant stategic result; but his brilliant manuever succeeded in pushing Meade back 40 miles and denying him the use of the railroad for over a month.
The campaign illustrated the principle of the offensive that made the Confederate commander a great general.

The engagement yesterday afternoon (Oct. 14 at Bristoe Station) between the troops covering the retreat and the rebels was a hot and severe one, judging from the heavy cannonading that we heard, and resulted disastrously to the enemy.
It was a quick and vigorous march from the time we broke camp at Bristoe; and the gallant achievements that were made by the 3d, 5th and 6th corps on last Saturday (Nov. 7) prove that the recent forward movement of Meade’s army was a decided and brilliant success.
The 1st and 2d divisions, with the artillery belonging to the corps, are stationed from Rappahannock Crossing to Bealton, employed as a guard to the communications this side of the river.

On the 18th, the brigade being in position at Bristoe to resist the enemy, my command had position on the left of the railroad, and poured a volley into the enemy's ranks; but they retired so quickly we could not tell the effect of our fire.
In the engagement near Buckland on the 19th, we could not get up in time to do much, though my boys were as ever eager for fight, and double-quicked to the front in time to give the enemy a few farewell shots and capture a number of prisoners.
My total loss in the campaign was 4 men killed, 11 wounded, a lieutenant and 4 men captured.

Two of them are in museums, but the whereabouts of the third, captured at Bristoe Station, was unknown.
The campaign received it’s name from a small hamlet along the railroad line where the main contact was finally made- Bristoe Station.
The captured flags were imprinted with identification numbers by the U.S. War Department, and when the flags were finally returned to the states at the turn of the century, those numbers were retained for the same purpose.

By the afternoon of October 14th, Lee's army was nearing Bristoe Station where Warren's II Corps was bringing up the rear of the Union army.
As Confederate troops moved into view of Warren's corps as it moved along the railroad tracks, the men deployed in the railroad cuts, skirmishers were deployed, and artillery prepared for battle.
Aside from Rappahannock Station and the Mine Run campaign in November and early December, there would be little action in Virginia until Grant's Overland Campaign in spring of 1864.

They marched north from Bristoe Station; halted, swung around to take a position facing south; waited; returned south, just missing the route of the Confederates by the Second Corps; waited; and marched north again crossing Bull Run.
After the Union victory at Rappahannock Station, Lee pulled back his line from the Rappahannock to form a defensive position along the Rapidan, except the right flank, which was entrenched along Mine Run, a small tributary of the Rappahannock, in the part of Virginia known as The Wilderness.
In this part of campaign of maneuvers, the 62d crossed the Rapidan and suffered the movement through the part of Virginia that in a few months would famously be known as The Wilderness.

Because the Third Corps was not last in the line of march, it was past Bristoe Station when the Confederates made an unsuccessful attack on the Second Corps.
General Meade's plan for this campaign was to cross the Rapidan River at a number of different fords and to attack the Confederate right flank.
Also in March, the Third Corps, which had enjoyed a special identity since at least the Peninsula Campaign but was now reduced in numbers, was cut down to the level of a division and moved to the Second Corps.

The Twenty-sixth encamped at Washington in May, 1861, and in October, having been assigned to Grover's Brigade, Hooker's Division, moved to Budd's Ferry, Md., where it was stationed until the spring campaign of 1862.

The author asserts that the Maryland campaign was a Federal success and allowed "the Lincoln administration to solidify its political support...." Quite the contrary happened.
Regarding the competence at Gettysburg of Lee's key commanders, Stuart, Ewell, and Longstreet, the book provides a brief review of their failures concluding that "....while Ewell's incompetence and Longstreet's recalcitrance were important factors, Lee's unwillingness to issue direct orders or to take charge of the battle lay at the root of the problem".
Understanding the military campaigns of the numerically weaker side is one of the more challenging issue in history.
