Bristol gave the aircraft the type number 188, of which three aircraft were to be built, one a pure test bed and the other two [constructors numbers 13518 and 13519] for flight testing.
The very advanced nature of the aircraft meant that stainless steel was used for the construction of the outer skin with a honeycomb centre, to which no paint was applied, but the problems with the new Argon arc welding technique known as puddle-welding caused long delays and was less than satisfactory.
Rolls Royce engines were at first selected to power the 188, but five engine combinations were tried, Two with Avon 200s, two with the De Havilland Gyron Junior and one with an AJ.65, the latter disintegrating on test.

In 1959 Bristol was forced to merge with English Electric, Hunting Aircraft and Vickers-Armstrongs to form the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), later to become part of British Aerospace, now BAE Systems.
In 1956 the division was renamed Bristol Aero Engines, and then merged with Armstrong Siddeley in 1958 to form Bristol Siddeley as a part of the airframe mergers that formed BAC.

Bristol started building aero engines on the Filton site around 1920, but the line can be traced back to the Brazil-Staker motorcar manufacturer, who built Rolls-Royce engines under licence during World War I. The company was taken over by Cosmos Engineering, who built the Mercury and the Jupiter radial engines.
The Bristol Hercules has 14 cylinders in two rows, and is a sleeve-valved radial air-cooled engine.
A scaled-down version of the engine, the Bristol Siddeley Gyron Junior, was used on the Bristol 188 stainless steel research aircraft, which was designed to investigate the effect of supersonic speeds on airframe structure.

The prototype 188, XF923, made its maiden flight on 14 April 1962 and its public debut at Farnborough in September of that year.
Both Bristol 188s were powered by de Havilland Gyron Junior engines; the first British engine designed for sustained running at supersonic speeds.
Although a maximum speed of Mach 1.88 was reached this fell short of the required Mach 2 performance.

Bristol 188 updated 9th December 2004, with new details cockpit and totally re-written xml gauges.
The Bristol 188 was developed by Bristol Aeroplane Co to meet specification ER134T for a M2.5 research aircraft.
The 188 was intended to "thermally soak" the airframe for long periods, but was unable to maintain these high speeds for long periods due the fuel consumption of the Gyron.

During the development of the Avro 730, Avro suggested a 3/8 scale analogue of the Avro 730, so perhaps the Bristol 188 was part of this programme.
The 188 finally flew in 1962, but due to the Gyron Junior engines' poor performance,failed to meet its full potential.
What little information gleaned from the Bristol 188, mainly on fabrication, led to Concorde being constructed with conventional alloys, with a resulting Mach limit of 2.2.

The 50s and 60s were a time of feverish aircraft experiments, and this Bristol 188 was the result of one of them.
Built almost entirely from stainless steel, the aircraft was intended to research the effects of heat generated by continuous high speed flying on aircraft and even featured a refridgerated cockpit and the ability to transmit flight data to a ground station.
The Bristol 188 was intended to exceeed Mach 2, but only reached Mach 1.88 and this was one of the reasons the project was cancelled in 1964 - after just two years.

Bristol 182 The Bristol 182R was designed for the 'Blue Rapier' project that asked for an unmanned, catapult-launched bomber.
It was adapted from an earlier turreted fighter design, and as a consequence had a strange armament layout: three 20mm guns were fitted behind the cockpit, pointing around 15 degrees up; the two in the lower fuselage were aligned at the same angle.
The Bristol Jupiter radials were lighter; to restore the balance the wings were slightly swept back.

This advanced plane was cancelled by the British government because of the economic crisis of the mid-1960s.
An other intersting British research aircraft on display is the Bristol 188, designed for high speed research.
The airframe is constructed of stainless steel to withstand the air friction of high speed flight, but the problem which limited the flying time was the limited fuel load and the two thirsty De Havilland Gyron Junior engines.

These images were taken during a visit to the RAF museum at Cosford near Wolverhampton, England in the summer of 2002.
The Bristol Type 188 first flew on 14th April 1962 as a test bed aircraft to assess the performance of a stainless steel skin during prolonged supersonic flight.
Interestingly the then super-secret U.S. Lockheed A-11 (wich later developed into the better know SR-71 flbird), an aircraft with a remarkably similar shape, also made its maden flight in April 1962 (on the 26th).
