The park is on U.S. 58 midway between Independence and Damascus and is reached from I-81 at Exit 45 in Marion; turn south on Route 16 and travel 33 miles to US 58 in the community of Volney.
Parking is available in the camp store lot or a lot across from the store - campers will have to walk between 20 and 40 yards to reach the camping area.
Although motorized vehicles are not permitted on park trails, electric wheelchairs and electric scooters that meet the federal definition for wheelchairs are allowed to enable people with disabilities to use the trails.

 GOVERNOR PATAKI: LAND SALE SETS STAGE FOR NEW STATE PARK
Governor George E. Pataki and Scenic Hudson today announced the transfer of 58 acres of Hudson River shorefront in the Town of Saugerties from Scenic Hudson to New York for the future development of Bristol Beach State Park, currently an undeveloped park.
Plans for developing the park will be put together with public input over the next year.
Scenic Hudson is selling the land to the state for 50 percent of its original cost.

 Swimming in the Hudson River Estuary
The Action Plan is a blueprint for the NYSDEC and partnering state agencies to implement specific management actions along the estuary, addressing three general themes: conservation of natural resources; remediation of pollution; and public use and enjoyment of the river.
In addition, five existing public beaches along the river were also studied in order to identify potential improvements and to develop cost estimates of such improvements.
The total cost of developing beaches at these sites is estimated to be approximately $3.5 million, not including the costs of land acquisition, water quality improvements, and other needed actions.

The potential swimming areas were unveiled in a state report, "Swimming in the Hudson River Estuary," which was undertaken in spring 2000 by the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
In Ulster County, Bristol Beach State Park in Saugerties was also identified as a possible swimming area, but, according to the report, significant environmental and other barriers make it "difficult to conceive offering public swimming" there.
The report did recommend upgrades to three operating beaches in Ulster County: Saugerties Village Beach on the Esopus Creek, the county's Ulster Landing Park in the town of Ulster and Kingston Point Beach.
