Britain.tv Wikipedia - Bristol Aeroplane Company
Bristol was involved in the post war renaissance of British civilian aircraft as inspired by the Brabazon Committee report.
At the same time the Bristol Britannia turboprop-powered airliner proved a success and it and Bristol Freighter transport aircraft were produced in quantity during the 1950s.
A research aircraft, the Bristol 188, was constructed in the 1950s to test the feasibilty of stainless steel as a material in a Mach 2.0 airframe.

 Bristol Centaurus
The Centaurus was the ultimate development of Bristol Engine Company's series of sleeve valve radial aircraft engines, a massive 18-cylinder two-row design that eventually delivered over 3,000hp.
In this case the "classic" 5.75" piston from their original 1918 Jupiter was placed in a longer-stroke cylinder, which combined with the new cylinders made the displacement jump from the Hercules's 2364 cubic inches to a massive 3270, making it one of the largest piston aircraft engines built.
It was used in both the the Bristol Britannia[?] and the ill-fated Brabazon[?].

A metallic futuristic test plane, the model T188, was also constructed in their factory next to Filton aerodrome to the north of Bristol city centre.
In the 1930s they developed a new line of radials based on the sleeve valve principle, which would develop into some of the most powerful piston engines in the world, and could continue to be sold into the 1950s.
In 1946, with the surplus capacity after WW2, the company started an offshoot, Bristol Cars, using pre-war BMW designs as the basis for a new car, the Bristol 400[?].

Magna Models 1/72 Bristol Buckmaster T1
The Mosquito design was such a winner, and given that the problems that Bristol experienced with its intended Centaurus engine meant that the Type 163 Buckingham did not fly until 1943, and this meant that the Bristol design didn't have a hope.
The Buckmaster was a large twin-engined, fast aircraft that had the principle role of training pilots for another Bristol aircraft, the ground-attack Brigand.
The kit is boxed in the usual Magna format: a sturdy white cardboard box that is half the thickness of a house brick with an outline sketch of a Bristol Buckmaster T1 on a green paper sheet pasted onto the front of the box.

Bristol Centaurus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Centaurus was the final development of Bristol Engine Company's series of sleeve valve radial aircraft engines, an 18-cylinder two-row design that eventually delivered over 3,000 hp (2.2 MW).
Like most Bristol Engines designs, the Centaurus was based on the mechanicals of an earlier design, in this case the "classic" 5.75 in (146 mm) piston from their original 1918 Jupiter.
While Bristol maintained that the Centaurus dated from 1938, production could not start until 1942 owing to the need to get the Hercules into production and improve the reliability of the entire engine line.

In 1959 Bristol was forced to merge with English Electric, Hunting Aircraft and Vickers-Armstrongs to form the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), later to become part of British Aerospace, now BAE Systems.
In 1917 Cosmos was asked to investigate air-cooled radial engines, producing the Bristol Mercury, a 14 cylinder two-row (helical) radial, which they launched in 1918.
In 1956 the division was renamed Bristol Aero Engines, and then merged with Armstrong Siddeley in 1958 to form Bristol Siddeley as a part of the airframe mergers that formed BAC.

The Centaurus was also used on the Bristol Brabazon prototype, which had four pairs of 2,500 bhp Centaurus engines, each pair driving a set of contra-rotating propellers.
The Bristol Centaurus is still used today to power many of the Furys that take part in 'Plylon-Racing' at Reno.

Recently, I had one such serendipitous encounter with a Bristol taxi driver who explained how he sends and receives messages from his cab as he cruises past ‘open’ domestic wi-fi networks in all parts of the city.
It is a fantastic idea that there is a patchwork ‘people’s wi fi network’ sprouting up across Bristol, with the potential for neighbours and even whole streets to share their Internet access.
