In 1373 Edward III of England proclaimed "that the said town of Bristol withall be a County by itself and called the county of Bristol for ever", but maps usually instead show it as part of Gloucestershire, and as the city spilled south of the river, it took the county with it.
Bristol is home to two major institutions of higher education: the University of Bristol, a "redbrick" chartered in 1909, and the University of the West of England, formerly Bristol Polytechnic, which gained university status in 1992.
Bristol was never well served by suburban railways, though the line to Avonmouth and Severn Beach survived the Beeching Axe and is still in operation today, while the line to Portishead has recently reopened to freight traffic.

The Festival's Management Committee have been working with the creditors and Bristol City Council to come up with a plan to save the event but are currently facing a huge financial shortfall.

After the theft of our free festival came the fences and 4x4's full of private security thugs designed to extract and maximise the profit from the event...This year ticket prices have increased by 50%, up from £6 per day to £9 and access to a new exclusive VIP area will cost £75.
I'd like to suggest an 'unofficial' community festival to take place this year on the outside of the separation barrier with accoustic musicians, community arts volunteers, jugglers, fireshows, face painting, food and drink to share and non-corporate good fun all round.
