This theatre prospered as the Theatre Royal's fortunes declined, a state of affairs which was to last for much of the early twentieth century.
In 1963, Bristol Old Vic became independent from its sister company in London, as the original Old Vic company was dissolved and reconstituted as the National Theatre.
Bristol Old Vic's most recent success, however, came not in the Theatre Royal, but at Princes Wharf in the heart of the City Docks.

The "Theatre in King Street" was built between 1764 and 1766 on land behind and to one side of the Coopers' Hall, with a passage through one of the houses in front of it serving as an entranceway.
The 150-seat New Vic Studio Theatre was built in place of the old entrance, and the Coopers' Hall provided the theatre with the grand faandccedil;ade and foyer area it had previously lacked.

The Old Profanity Showboat was a late 1982 middle-of-the-night brainchild of Ki Longfellow-Stanshall, the wife of Vivian Stanshall, one of England's national treasures.
Staged a second time in late 1988 at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, it lacked the cockeyed appeal of Thekla's unusual setting, and the hand-picked Bristol cast and orchestra (for which much of the material was specifically crafted).
She remains at the moorings in central Bristol where she was first positioned in 1983 and continues to function as a music venue and nightclub.

The invited audience of governors, staff and parents, past and present, were treated to a number of performances from current and former students, many of whom, inspired by their drama experiences at Gordonstoun, have gone on to study Drama and Acting at University.
First up was James Cawood, a graduate of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School who gave us an inspiring rendition of "O for a Muse of Fire", the chorus at the start of Shakespeare's Henry V.
To lighten the mood, former students then reprised their roles as the Famous Five, which was so successful at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and soon had the audience chuckling at the plethora of visual and verbal jokes, many of which poked gentle fun at life at Gordonstoun.

A terrific revolving set, all cock-eyed angles and too-small walls, was superbly used by director Tony Falkingham to cram lots of people into ever-decreasing spaces with the result that the farce became increasingly frenetic and desparate as the events of the play unfolded.
At one point the school superintendent is given a cigar by the (supposed) government inspector.
