Rolls-Royce Olympus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A marine version of the Olympus was trialled in the refitted Royal Navy frigate HMS Exmouth which became the first major warship in a western navy to be powered by gas turbine engines.
The Olympus was subsequently used for the Type 21 frigates and the sole Type 82 destroyer, HMS Bristol (TM1A).
Bristol Siddeley of the UK and Snecma Moteurs of France were to share the project.

Bristol Aero engines developed the Olympus BE.10 as a high power (10000lb) two spool turbojet for the RAF V-bombers to meet spec TE.1/46.
The Olympus 22R formed the basis of the powerplant for the forthcoming SST, with further modifications raising dry thrust to 29300lb and reheated thrust to 39940lb.
The Olympus was proposed for a variety of applications, from supersonic fighters and hypersonic research aircraft (as a combination powerplant with ramjet) to the other end of the scale, powering warships.

 Bristol Aero Collection
Bristol started building aero engines on the Filton site around 1920, but the line can be traced back to the Brazil-Staker motorcar manufacturer, who built Rolls-Royce engines under licence during World War I. The company was taken over by Cosmos Engineering, who built the Mercury and the Jupiter radial engines.
The Bristol Hercules has 14 cylinders in two rows, and is a sleeve-valved radial air-cooled engine.
A scaled-down version of the engine, the Bristol Siddeley Gyron Junior, was used on the Bristol 188 stainless steel research aircraft, which was designed to investigate the effect of supersonic speeds on airframe structure.

 Famous Vulcans - XA903 Olympus 593
In turn the Olympus 320 can trace its origins back to the Olympus 301 which powered the later versions of the Vulcan B. Mk 2, so in fitting an Olympus 593 to a Vulcan B Mk 1, we were keeping it in the family, so to speak.
'The Olympus 593 installation on XA903, consisting of one half of a Concorde nacelle, was slung underneath the bomb bay, fuel and water tanks plus instrumentation and control avionics filling the original bomb-bay space.
A water spray grid containing over a hundred nozzles was mounted ahead of the Olympus 593 air intake, and water was sprayed into the engine at varying concentrations with the intake de-icing system in operation.
