 Royal Horticultural Society - Britain in Bloom
Britain in Bloom is an all-inclusive campaign, organised by the RHS in partnership with BandQ, that encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting improvements to their local areas for the benefit of local people.
Britain in Bloom also promotes good practice in the environment by encouraging recycling, the establishment of conservation areas and other sustainable projects.
Bloom Review is the twice-yearly newsletter of the Britain in Bloom campaign, keeping communities up-to-date with recent developments, case studies and useful tips, hints and advice.

Britain in Bloom is one of the most effective, and longest running environmental competitions in the United Kingdom and each year it grows in size and importance and involves more people, groups and organisations.
None of this could be achieved without the enthusiasm of the whole community working together to improve their local environment and the recognition that involvement in Britain in Bloom can bring is an important factor and often the catalyst for action.

Since their initial involvement in the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom’ competition in 1977 the towns enthusiasm has gained it many awards and led on to the awarding of the prestigious ‘Britain in Bloom’ Medium Town Trophy in 2004.

BATH will be crossing its fingers on Monday, August 9 when Britain in Bloom judges from the Royal Horticultural Society will be visiting the city to assess how well it has done in this year’s competition for the UK’s best small city.
Bath’s most recent success in the Britain in Bloom competition was in 2001 and in total the city has won the national city title on 12 previous occasions.
The other communities being judged in the Britain in Bloom small city category are Bracknell, Crawley, Norwich, Perth and Winchester.

It is the first time the city has taken the prestigious title, this year beating off competition from Carlisle, Londonderry, Lewisham and the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
The national award follows Derby taking the City category in the East Midlands in Bloom competition, which also saw areas of derby scooping awards.  Spondon won the Urban Community category, narrowly beating Mickleover – both won Silver Gilt medals.  And Normanton won a Silver medal in the Urban Regeneration category.
The campaign is people focused with large numbers from all sectors of the community involved in improving the environment.

Some councillors and Britain in Bloom hangers-on objected to a few weeds and wild flowers and threatened me with prosecution if I did not cut my grass, tidy the garden and generally make it look as neat and prissy as their gardens.
Slowly, Britain in Bloom are bringing the word 'environmental' into their judging.
The competition now comes under the RHS rather than the Tidy Britain Group (did they ever do anything worthwhile?) and may be a move in the right direction.

The Committee have been told that Melrose is to be one of the nominations for the 2005 Beautiful Britain in Bloom competition.
Beautiful Britain in Bloom is run by the Royal Horticultural Society and finalists are drawn from all of the entries in the various categories.    In 2004 the Melrose in Bloom Group were winners in both Beautiful Scotland in Bloom and Scotland's Floral Gateway.    In 2005, they will also compete in the two Scottish competitions.
Melrose in Bloom Secretary, Duncan Bradon, said:  "It is a particular honour to have been nominated for Beautiful Britain in Bloom.    We are really looking forward to the competition in August and we hope for good weather.   A fine spring and summer will make all the difference for us."
